Fuel tank interchange
Fuel tank interchange
The rear tank on my 96 4x4 may be leaking. I've smelled fumes since I've owned it but my MPG has been ok and there are no puddles or stains on or near the tank. I have a brand new tank on the front. I have a 90 2wd truck for parts, it has a rear tank only and it's also a 5.0, will this fit my 96? It looks like it's in good shape so I'd like to save some dough if it will fit.
I guess I'll have to drop it and have a look. I don't smell gas all the time, it's just a wiff here and there. I can fill it up with no leaks visable. When I bought the truck it had a brand new front tank...bonus....LOL

A truck tank will take a lot. Plus, you still have to get the tank out of the truck. By that point (it's not cheap stuff) you might as well replace the tank, preferably with a plastic one that won't be able to rust out.
Possible exception - if you actally have a hole, not rust out (as is common) there's some sort of snot the off-road folks use that sticks well despite gas - but not so well to rust, and a rusty tank, if plugged one place will soon enough rust out somewhere else.
My Dumb Question (since I ought to go ask it at the parts place but have not yet) - are the seal rings on the gas caps easily available without a gas cap inside them? Mine are a bit dubious, but the caps are fine.
