Weird Fuel Gauge problem

OK Ive looked and looked and found problems with the gas gauge to be a common problem but mine is doing something different than all the topics I have seen.

My truck has two tanks. On one tank the gauge reads wayy past full. On the other tank it doesnt register at all? Where do I begin my search? I have unplugged the connectors and there is no corrosion. Reinstalled and no difference.

Hey welcome to the club of crappy ford senders!

I had/have both failures...

This was in my 88 and was corrected with a new sender (bout $120) when I also changed my fuel pump, new tank, and skid plate.

Now my 92 has the "always empty, but sometimes goes to about 1/4" failure which is an electrical problem somewhere

Yeah its extremely common. Guess Ive been lucky having owned six 84-95 F150s or Broncos and never having a bad fuel gauge reading until now. Oh well any idea if the sender from 91 F150 will work with 87? I have a 91 parts truck. Both have dual tanks.

I don't know on the sender. The pumps are different I'm pretty sure. Might try lookin in a catalog to see if the numbers match.

Oh and welcome to the site as well! Whats the specs on the truck?

I've had 2 F150's, and both had bad senders. Maybe that's why bikers like Fords - they're used to using the odometer...

Don't know on the full reading, but my 88 had the same problem showing empty. It was the float on the fuel pump/level indicator in the tank. It had a hole in it and would fill up with gas and therefore would not float, just sink to the bottom and show empty all the time. bought a new one for about 6 bucks at the dealership and its still sitting on my dresser...lol. Small brass looking bulb about the size of a C battery.

my wifes falcon's gas guage did'nt read right either...

showed nothing..empty and it was new when we rebuilt the car (fixed now)

it was the GROUND..there is no ground wire... the sender is grounded to the tank flange where the sending unit goes in

now granted its a '66 and things have changed i'm sure

but look and see if there is a bad "seal" where it goes in the tank...

just a thought

...zap!
