93 explorer

Hey guys,
A friend of mine has a 93 explorer with the 4 liter v6, and he is telling me that the truck will idle fine, but when he goes to take off, or build speed in anyway, i will begin to act like its choking out, and hes wanting to know the possibilites on what it may be. Any help would be appreciated

Well it could be fuel (pump or filter) or it could be spark (plugs or wires). When was the last time any of those were changed.

well, he just did the plugs and wires, and he said it made the CEL go off, and he said the fuel filter appeared to be in pretty decent shape. he said driving it its like its getting too much fuel, like maybe an 02 sensor, but im not sure.

I would suspect one of the following:

TPS

MAF

Clogged cats or exhaust.

The TPS and MAF can be disconnected, one at a time, to see if the problem goes away while testing. I have seen this exact symptom on a 3.0L Ranger. That turned out to be the MAF and the EEC self-test had a MAF code.

I'd suggest running the codes, both KOEO and KOER, to see what the self-diagnostics might show. On this truck, all you need is a paper clip and the instructions.

Hey, whats up Steve!

This is "NotSoSlowSHO" from SHOforums

The TPS is very suspect from your description.
In addition to Steve's suggestions, I would add fuel delivery .

Be sure to check the fuel pressure.

BTW, does the engine rev fine (not stumble or dip in RPM) when you "blip" the throttle in nuetral?

no.. it idles like hell, and i did see the cat when we drove one night, and it was over 1000 degrees, so i think that may have something to do with it

small update, he changed the maf, but the obd1 keeps throwing the code, although the sensor is new.. which is not normal i can only assume, as well as blowing alot of black smoke, even with new plugs, o2 sensor, oil change...

yeah.. heres a small update, we unplugged the maf sensor, it appeared that the truck ran better without it, and if he plans to run it without for the sake of the truck running better, can this cause any permanent damage?

also, i need to find out where i can find a wiring layout for this 93 explorer.

thanks

Heya rustbucket....

The FPR on the Exploder has a tendency to rupture the internal diaphragm. This causes a seriously rich mixture and serious driveability problems.

Pull the vacuum line from the FPR and check for fuel in it. If found, replace the FPR.

You can download a copy of the service CD from www.************

Running W/O MAF will lower fuel mileage since the PCM is guessing the intake airflow from the TPS position and other monitored sensors.
