93 F150 4x4 only gets 14MPG! HELP!
Well I've finally had it with the poor gas mileage/high gas prices with my F150 so I need some suggestions to help my abysmal mileage.
I get this mileage with approx 60% highway/40% city driving
Heres the truck specs:
93 F150 4x4 with 302/AOD tranny
Flowtech shorty headers
Manual locking hubs (Just to let u know it's in 2 wheel)
31 Mud terrains (yes I know these don't help but i need them for work)
Recent tuneup (plugs, oil, air filter)
Commute with tailgate down and I drive with a light foot
I really don't understand why my mileage is so poor with these specs.
SO any hepful/not expensive ideas on how to help me get a few more miles per gallon?
I was thinking maybe a K&N might help and I was wondering if perhaps my catalytic converter is plugged.
Also my initial timings at 10, due u think raising it might help?

My '88 F150 with 302 and 5 speed got 13 mpg without a trailer and 10 mpg with a trailer, and it stayed the same for 200K miles. Your 14 mpg is 100% normal and typical. Probably above average, since you have the additional weight and drag of 4WD.
Oh, and please put your tailgate back up. It doesn't help. Every study done indicates that it does NOT help mileage by leaving the tailgate down.

That's not really that bad. You could improve on it with changing your driving style, that's how I did it...but frankly you're doing OK with it.
I do plan on flushing the tranny and putting synthetic fluid in, and also possibly going to a lighter weight oil in the diffs and x-fer case, all to reduce friction. Maintaining your truck will maximize it all too. Springtime will see new plugs and wires, new air filter (change these often), new fuel filter, and probably a can of injector cleaner in the near future too. I'd expect to see at least 1mpg average gain by doing this...

Dayum...15-17 AVERAGE?!? I'd love that. Although my truck has shown signs of being able to make well over 19mpg with ease, and perhaps 20mpg if driven right and after a good run of tune-up and maintenance items.
