96 Throttle body leaking

My 96 150 5.0 has a coolant leak out of the throttle body's freeze plug. I'm told this is a common problem due to bad design, as the plugs rot out after time. I am not normally one to perform bandaid fixes on my truck, but it just seems silly to replace the throttle body over this. I am considering bypassing the coolant line around the unit. Can anyone give me a good reason why I really need coolant running through the throttlebody?

If I do end up replacing the unit, does anyone have advice on going aftermarket/ high performance?

Thanks in advance.

it keeps the body from getting to hot. it warms it up to to prevent freezing, sound dumb but in colder climates it could be a problem. if it wasn't for the fact that it also keeps temps stable for the throttle body i'd bypass mine. hope this help a little in your decision.

I bypassed it to save on possible leaks and connections. No problems so far.

Thanks guys. I was considering replacing it with the BBK unit, since it is only $9 more than the Ford unit. However, when I checked it out on their site, I discovered that they also have the coolant connections, but they actually recommend bypassing it! So, that's what I did. If it turns out to be an issue, I can always buy the new one. If not, the saved cash would get me a sweet Troyer e-fan kit...
