30,000 mile maintenance

My truck just rolled over to 30000 miles yes thats thirty thousand and not 300 thousand, and i went to my dealer and the maintenance for 30k is over $400 dollars What the ******. The only thing on there list i cannot do is flush the tranny ??? do you think i need to have it flushed or should i just drop the pan and replace the filter? to have it flushed is about $190 any thoughts appreciated.

I would recommend a flush every 30K, or a drain and fill every 15k. For the money i think you should just do the tranny service yourself if you can. But check the fluid and see what it looks like, if it is black and burnt you may want to pay for the flush now and keep up on it yourself after that. $400 isn't that bad for a 30k service depending on what they are doing to the truck. I work at an import dealership and we do 30K's all day long at $600 a pop.

Ummm, what year?

30K is the service interval for normal driving on an auto tranny, but on my grandfathers 94 bronco with 32K we just flush it every other year, as the fluid still gets nasty.

Not that hard actually, and if you can change your oil, you can do a tranny flush.

No actually you cannot do a true tranny flush yourself, if you just drop the pan you get maybe 5 quarts out. In a true tranny flush you drain all the fluid (everything in the torque converter and etc) which amounts to about 13 quarts. But to answer your first question its a 1995 F-150 with a 351 Windosor and an E4OD automatic tranny.

Well i guess technicallly you could drain the whole thing yourself but im not really sure that i want to pull my transmission out to empty out the torque converter. And as for the lines so i take them all off to drain 12 hours later one of the fittings or ends break now i either have to replace the whole cooler line or deal with the leak NO THANKS.

I'm not following you...?

I pull the return line from the cooler, clamp a hose to it, and run that into a bucket. Then running the engine in park uses the pump in the tranny to flush everything automaticly. When air starts to come from the hose, there is dang near enough flushed to make me happy, then I put the line back on and refill.

Why would I need or ever use a witty reply

Uh there are parts in the tranny and torque convertor that still need lubrication even in park. Flushing it by running it out of fluid is not a good idea.

It's not like you are running forever loaded down, just shut off when the first airbubbles come out.
