89 F150 4x4
I was just given an 89 f150 4x4 , the door tag is unreadable but it does have an 8.8 rear diff. My questions are:
1. Is there any way to decode the vin to get the specs?
2. There are 2 wires that plug in to the top of the diff case, It does not look after market, any Ideas? Did ford ever try making an e locker maybe (probly wishfull thinking ) There is no temp gauge in the cab. But there is an unlabeled rocker switch.

The 2 wires that plug in to the top of the diff case is for the speed sensor,
most of the time it was used for RABS but some times it was also used for
the speedometer and PCM (EEC) when you see nothing wired to the tail
shaft of the transmission (as in my 1995 f-150).
You need to read the tag under the bolt on the rear of the diff case.
There will be a bottom line that reads something like:
3 L 55 88 5DC3 or 3 55 88 5DC3
The first 3 is some times under the bolt head is not read in the reading.
This will tell you what diff case you have.
No, the VIN will not tell you what diff case you have. It will tell you:
1, 2 ,3 = the Mfg, Make and Type
4 = the brakesystem and GVWR class
5,6,7 = the model
8 = the engine type
9 = Check Digit
10 = the year, and in your case K=1989
11 = Assembly Plant
13 through 17 = Sequence number
