How to get trouble codes? Switch on/off??

I'm not sure pre 97 vehicles have the dpfe sensor on them.
But I would agree with SHO that it could possibly not be the valve itself.
I would just doublecheck the vacuum lines themselves and maybe spray some intake cleaner in the lines while running just to clean up any carbon.
On my 2000 f150 I had,I threw an egr code and it was the ports in the dpfe sensor were getting clogged.
Let us know what happens.
