Question 1988 F-150 I-6 300 EFI stalling/cutting out

5 speed
130,000 miles

On average 2 times a year or so and it does not matter if engine is cold or warmed up, after idling for a short while, the first time i start to engage the clutch after starting engine it will sputter and die. Then i will attempt to start it about 2-5 times. Then it will eventually start but i have to rev it to around 2,500 rpms and hold it there to keep it running. It will run rough, kick out white smoke out of the exhaust when it cops this attitude and has a very strong gas smell. Then about a minute or so later it will start running smooth and stops kicking out white smoke and the gas smell. Hmmmm.......strange......

Well here it is almost 2 years after my original post above and this is my update. I ended up having a friend (with a Snap-On scanner) plug into the truck computer to see what the problem is. The fancy scanner (no blinking lights or beeps with this one - we are talking hi-tech with a mini laptop like screen with words and everything) said that there was a problem with the EGR system. So I replaced the EGR valve and kept the truck for around 6 more months. Never had the problem happen again, dont really know if that was causing the problem or not - I have heard that a faulty EGR system can do strange things.
