Strange Sputter Sputter
Strange Sputter Sputter
OK... asking the experts...HiOSilver has developed the annoying sputter. Doesn't seem to matter cold, warm or hot it does it all the time. Changed Cap and rotor. Sprayed throttle body full of cleaner. Ran ALOT of fuel injector cleaner thru the system. Not really sure were to go next. If you give it WOT it will jump on in there and smooth out. Next thought was to have the injectors checked. Have a diesel / fuel injector shop around the corner from work. Any suggestions. I knew coming back to Atlanta and in town driving was going to start giving me problems. The twice weekly 500 mile runs at almost wide open back and forth to Jacksonville sure did keep the system cleaned out. Thanks in advance.
Have not scanned for codes as of yet. I have a 4-2 air bag flash ( which I think is basically the "clock spring" and which I have had for about oh 4 yrs now ) I'm expecting to have an EGR code. Just got finished with a scrubbing of the wife's Expy throttle body and EGR tubes. Looking at the upper throttle body assembly on HiOSlvr doesn't look fun but I'm sure I would be shocked if I tackled that puppy for a Saturday job.
If HiOSlvr is the truck in your signature, then your problem is most likely injectors, but could be the EGR.
Checking the EGR is easy. Disconnect and plug the vacuum line going to the EGR, and see if the problem goes away. If it does, replace the EGR.
With injectors, the trick isn't using a lot of injector cleaner, the trick is using a lot of cleaner and not diluting it as much. You should use twice as much as they recommend for a full tank, and put it in an empty tank, and add 5 gallons of gas. Drive for an hour, and then let the truck sit over night. This lets the injectors soak with some cleaner in them. If things don't improve the next day, then the injectors should be replaced.
Getting to the EGR is simple in your truck. All you need is a large enough open end wrench for the EGR tube nut. I believe it's a 1", but don't hold me to that. Spray the hell out of it w/ WD40. When you get the wrench on, have it as far away from the hood as possible, and try and hit it sharply, rather than slowly forcing it. A sharp hit will break the nut free, whereas slowly forcing it may strip the sides off the nut.
