What can make the timing jump around 6 degrees????

Hi Guys
What can make the timing on my 86 F-150 5.0L jump around 6Degrees (with the spout in)?

With spout out it's a cool calm 10 degrees BTDC,

Spout in it's all over the place running aboout 30 to 36 Degrees BTDC at a steady 2500 rpm?

Just the chain or somthing else?

See my other thread "86 running like poo" for details.
Local Ford dealer says they can't diagnose an '86 anymore!

Thanks
