gas tank repair..
gas tank repair..
Well..
I thought I had 1 hole in the top of the front tank on my '86 F 150.. If I could be so lucky..
I've patched 6 now.. All but one, were so small, I couldn't put a paper clip end thru them.. I patch one, only to realize that the "wet spot" surrounding it contains yet another..
I'd repaired ONE hole in the BOTTOM of my rear tank, with the permatex "gas tank and radiator repair" epoxy. It's leak free, now.
For those of you who haven't used it.. It comes in a roll, that looks like stick candy, black coated and white inside.. You knead the stuff, about the consistency of modeling clay, until it's gray, then work it into the hole.. 2 hours later, (assuming you've found all the holes) it's ready to drive..
I'm considering... Just scrapping this tank..
BUT..
I bought new straps for it, in December 03, and the sending unit is still functional..
A new tank would run $150, and I'd probably ruin the sending unit getting it out, with my damn luck..
Does anyone know of an EXTERIOR sealant, I could apply to the tank to deal with these pinholes?
I know there are sealants for the inside available, but again, I'd have to disturb the sending unit to prep the tank..
I "converted" the truck to "rear tank only" and it's running.. It's a rusted out hulk, which I love, but I realistically shouldn't dump a ton of cash into...
Ideas are appreciated..

Por-15 would probably work good, but that stuff costs about $30 a pint. If you go to a local radiator and gas tank shop i bet you can get a used, rust free southern gas tank that has been cleaned and sealed for about $150 with the sending unit.

...Yeah, I feel like I'm already losing that war..
Do either of you know if the 33 gallon "Bronco" tank will mount in place of my rear tank??
Bronco Tank
It's a little less than the capacity of the dual tank setup, I don't have to worry about the diverter valve failing, and the listed tank is PLASTIC, so rust wouldn't be an issue..
I've emailed "Bronco Graveyard" to see what they know about doing that..
I think this would be the best deal going, if it would work..
I'd even to be willing to go the "junkyard" route, for the Bronco tank...
let me know..

I live in Arkansas (50 Miles From Memphis Tennessee)i tell you guys i took for granted the mild winters and living in a rust free zone hehehehehehehe we've had one snow flurry all winter here and you couldnt even tell it was snowing unless you looked at a light and you could see the small flakes. You see trucks running around here 20 and 30 years old with not a speck of rust i never remember one winter when anything had to be applied to our roads due to bad weather! If any of you guys need rust free parts drop me an email i'll be glad to set you up with some salvage yards around here thats more than reasonable on their stock.

AJRN: If you got that many holes, you got rust in your tank. Better bit the bullit and replace it. Its not a hard job, just time consuming on the first one. There is a trick to gettin the filler hose outta the tank and you gotta have the right fuel line quick disconnect tool. Also be prepared to fight gettin the old one out if you go from the bottom. When the trucks are built they install the tank before the bed. If I had it to do over I would pull the bed
