lowering a 1970 f-100

A friend and myself have been working on a 1970 f-100 that is to become a street/strip truck. We have done extensive drivetrain modification, The truck is awasome, will burn both rear tires to the rims without heasitating. The truck started out a city truck (bright orange) with an I6, 4 speed manuel tranny, and 2.73s in the rear. Neadless to say, that would never do. So now it is a very strong running 460, c6, 4.10s. The rear suspension is going to be a 4-link, so it will be easy to adjust ride height. The front is the problem, it is a 2wd with a king pin setup. You cannot just lower it because then the alignment will be messed up. I have though of the mustang 2 front end but they are in high demand around here because not many were sold to this area. Another thing that has bothered me is would it be able to withstand the weight of a big block?? Another route I have concidered is a crown vic front suspension, it was designed for a full frame v8 car. Does anyone have any ideas, I would like to avoid buying the drop I-beams that are sold, anybody can do that. Thanks

yeah anybody can do the ibeams, because that is really the only option.

Belltech makes front end lowering springs, I have no idea if you HAVE to use the ibeams or not. I went the full deal so I had to.

Anything other that dropped i-beams will require some custom fabrication, but if you are comfortable with that i think it would be cool to use a lightning front suspension on it. You could possibly go with a mustang suspension with airbags to carry the weight.

Hey Pete, I have a 93 F150, same thing as yours but a short bed and i'm wanting to pull off a lowering job. Do you think you could send some pics of the suspension components and maybe just some information on the project?
If you could it would be really appreciated.

I should be able to put the axle on top of the leaf in the rear, even use blocks to lower it more, as long as I watch my drive angles and clearance.
The front is the only thing that scares me, im not sure about the front suspension. I know id have to cut clearance for the front fenders on the front for tire clearance and steering becasue it would be a solid stance, im not using airbags or hydrolics, and i know id have to lose the fender wells all around for clearance also.
Any ideas, hints, or advice would be great!
Thanks

-Ethan

Lower your F100

I totally disagree with dropped beams being the only way to go. We installed a front suspension from a 2005 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Detroit Eaton makes dropped springs for the CV. We also installed their 1 1/2" drop springs. The pic is our '70 against a stock '68. With the CV suspension swap you get rack and pinion steering, 12" rotors with dual piston calipers. She stops great! Our next move is to ditch the 9" in favor of an IRS from a '95 Thunderbird. You also get a sway bar & if you choose the Police Interceptor / Taxi front suspension you get the heavy duty handling package.

Here is the thread I have running on our 1970 F100

If you have any questions just let me know.

Have fun with it!

Sounds like a sweet project. I'd like to do something similar with a '79, but keep a four speed.

Be sure to poke around on fordiification, and welcome to F150online Elgemcdlf.

Cv ifs

Something I forgot about the CV IFS. I did not weigh what I took out (the I Beam) so I have no idea what the weight difference is. The Cv is an aluminum crossmember with aluminum lower control arms and of course the rack unit is aluminum. They ad some have disk re in any CV or Marauder from 2003 - 2007.

If you go with the IRS www.truckirs.com makes the mount kit. They came in Thunderbirds, Cougars & Lincolns. The Lincoln units have an aluminum third member. Shop around. Some came with disc brakes & or air bags. You can swap out the wheel bearings to give you the large bolt pattern. Matches the CV bolt pattern.
