Tailgate... improved MPG when down?
to tail gate or not to tail gate
i went w/flo thru tail gate it does eliminate the drag but i think
mpg gains are minimal but then again i cruise around quite often
'coz i love being behind the wheel of my truck

I recently read an article from a Ford engineer that said the only way to inprove mileage was with a tonneau cover. The flow through nets actually increased turbulence in the bed, and dropping the tailgate down is really bad for the hinges.
I'll try and find it for you.

I have heard (rumor-central) that wind tunnel tests have proven driving with the tailgate down (or removed) causes not only turbulence, but a downward force on the rear wheels which equates to drag and, therefore, lower mpg. The same source stated that an aerodynamic top would help performance slightly, but not enough to run out and buy one.
This link both measures difference in aero drag and shows the smoke path over the various configurations on a Dodge truck.

On my truck I notice a very slight difference in mileage with the tonneau cover on, but I don't get in a lot of highway miles.
Unless you're looking for a free mileage upgrade, I would suggest either underdrive pulleys, electric fans, or ignition upgrades. If you drive a lot of highway miles the tonneau or hard cover might pay off a little better than in my case.
