Rear end gearing... how to tell??

Hi all,
I'm still searching to buy a 1993 to 1996 f150 Short bed, regular cab, 2wd, inline 6, with a 5 speed. I want this combo to get the best gas mileage possible.

I've looked at several now and I really need to find out how to determine what the rear end gearing is. I been told that this information is on the sticker inside the drivers door, but I do not know how to decode it. Can any one help?

Also what is the best gear ratio for max MPG?

Thankyou so much for everyones help!

Don

You can jack up the rear end, put a mark on the driveshaft and turn the tire one full revolution and count how many times the driveshaft rotates, this will give an idea ie. alsmost three turns would more than likely be 2:73, etc.

You can also pull the inspectin cover of the rear differential and count the number of teet on the ring gear and the pinion, then divide the pinion number into the ring gear number, easy and extremely accurate.

One of these may be the thing to do if you bought your truck used like I did. Never know what the previous owners have done.

Not quite. If it has an open rear end you have to jack up one wheel only and turn it 2 revs to compensate for the differential. With a trac-lok you have to jackup both rear wheels and turn the wheel thrun one rev.

If your looking for gas mileage, I have a 78 short bed 4x4 that I put a 71 351C with a c-6 tranny. 3.50 gears and 33" tires that gets better gas mileage(when you stay out of it) than my 87 f150 2wd w/ 4.9I6, 5sp and 3.45 gears. The 78 will also spank the 87 and sounds soooo much better than a 6cyl. Check around...... 300 6cyl is a tough and durable engine, but I have seen many v-8's get better gas mileage.

I had a 71 351C, my first engine build when I was 15. Loved that motor, strong as hell, huge heads.
