Mod my '94, or buy the '04
Hi guys,
I have a 1994 XLT Scab 4x4 with a 5.8. I haven't done any mods on it; it is all stock. It has 124k on it. Fairly clean, just some scratches here and there, the driver door doesn't always unlock, the interval wipers don't interval, and now the airbag is flashing a "32" code at me one in awhile. I've replaced one tranny. I'm curious to know how you all have worked on your trucks. I'm thinking of buying a new '04, but maybe for the amount of money I'd use for a down, I could build up my truck. I'm thinking of better leaf springs and shocks, tires and wheels, upgrading brakes, maybe flowmasters and air filters, upgrading my 3:55 to new gears, front diff and transfer case work, stuff like that. Any feedback on how you've done this and how much it costs would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would do both, just take out lots of loans
I plan on getting a 2005 mustang when they come out, but no one makes trucks like they used too. IMHO all new trucks are designed to be throwaway trucks that you trade in before they hit 100K miles. I think the late 80's - early 90's trucks are stronger and more reliable. I want to eventually buy another early 90's truck to fix up and use as a daily driver.
If your paying a shop to fix up your 94 it's going to be expensive, if you can do the work yourself i say go for it. Shocks, springs, new wheels, and a flowmaster exhaust will really do a lot for your truck and it's not a lot of work.

I'd look up the Blue book value of your truck. I ran into the same thing with my Ranger. I'd just put 2 grand into it but it was only worth 3500. It's ok if you plan on keeping it, but if you're not dedicated to driving it for the next 3-5 years I wouldn't invest any more money in it.
Actually ANY vehicle can be Apreciated just like they Depreciate, all you have to do is go around to shops that do the type of work you've done on your vehicle get estimates of what they would charge to do the work you've done yourself , take them to your local Dept. of Revenue and ask to have it Apreciated . some states call it "assessing" yes they will want more taxes for it but it does revalue your vehicle to be worth more then "book". i have alot of money into my 90' and sure book says it is only worth $3500 but i wouldn't take less then $6000 for it and it is worth every penny of it too .
I guess it really depends on you. Is your truck a daily driver or just a haul/tow kind of vehicle? How does your truck stack up to your needs right now? If there is anything left to be desired, can it be easily fixed? You ask suggestions for mods, but that all depends on what you are not currently satisfied with. New springs/shocks are always good after 10 years, and free flowing exhaust is always nice. Do you want more power? More comfort? Some specifics would be nice. I definitely agree though, I wouldn't sink any appreciable amount of money into the truck unless you plan on keeping it for another 3 or 4 years at least.
Thanks guys
To answer some of your questions, my truck is both the daily driver and the work truck; hauling, towing, hunting, etc...

Looking to increase my power and comfort in ride. Sure, I'd like to get the new model, but I can see my truck on bigger tires, nice wheels, beefed up suspension, flowmasters, K&N filter...and for a lot less than buying the new model. What resources do you suggest for finding this info? magazines, websites?
