Buddy's 351 build-up now ...
Well, awhile back I mentioned about my buddy's (Jamie) 302 that he wanted to build up and put in his '29 Ford. He ended up selling it and ended up getting a 1991 F350 Dually with a 351 in it. So now we have a new base motor to start with but we are going to re-build this one to start with a fresh motor. He wants about 350 HP at the rear wheels so we are figuring about 400 - 425 HP at the motor.
He is going with his 512 lift cam and probably a good set of heads, try to work him into the Trick Flow Twist Wedge ones. I was thinking power pulleys, electric fan is going to be a must because of the shortness of room ahead of the engine and headers are going to be tricky on this as the frame is somewhat narrow up front. I was thinking long tube headers followed up with a Magnaflow system but that is my ideas. Will probably add a superchip to the beast as well since we have the EFI system on the motor and will be migrating it to the '29. He has a C4 that he is going to build up and put behind the motor and he has a 7.5" or close to that (can't remember exactly) for a rear-end. Probably going to have to upgrade this to a 9" instead because of HP & TQ with this little monster.
My concerns are for the bottom end of the motor, will we have to get much more than stock equipment to build the bottom end to hold that kind of HP & TQ? The truck isn't going to weight a whole lot either, probably less than a mustang for sure. Does anyone know the rough HP & TQ figures for this truck?
Comments, question and concerns will be greatly appreciated !!
Oh and Chris (PKRWUD), are you still up for a e-mail conversation when we get this beast moving through its building stages ????

Personally, I would like to go with some better than stock bottom-end equipment but that will depend upon how much Jamie wishes to spend on the whole project. He has some body parts that he needs to fine and some frame issues that I think we should take a good look at before straping in the 351 with that kind of HP & TQ.
Keep the ideas coming.

Ran into a couple of sites last night for fuel injector size calculations. By the calculations that were on those sites, inorder for us to make 425 - 450 out of this motor we would need about 35-40 lbs injectors.
Does this sound correct ??? And what about the fuel pump, throttle body, Mass air flow sensor, how horses can they all handle. Anyone know any sites that I could look up parts to see how much HP & TQ they can handle ?? This might start to get a little crazy for large parts if too much of it has to be changed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

i think ford makes a gt-40 intake with a base for the 351, (same intake as the first generation lightning) awsome looking intake with much better than stock performance.i know trick flow makes one for about $550. and i think edlebrock makes one for a 351 truck that accepts the stock throttle body the other dont.
65 or 70 mm throttle body ($200). as for injectors, the calculations are funny because i have seen ls-1 camaros making that power level and more with 24's. my tpi 383 makes the power you are talking about with 22's. so 30 should get the job done on a n/a motor($220). blowers at that level need more. best thing i can tell you is talk around look at the 5.0 mustangs and see what size they run.
not sure if that year is mass air-flow or not but if it isnt, ford makes a conversion kit. in the older efi, the computer does not have as much control so a chip is good but not the same effects you get with a newer motor(even with the cam the mass air should run fine). long tubes would be nice, but short tubes on the 351 would be cheeper and possibly make the move to the 29, longs probably would not. as for the bottom end, good assembly and balancing with good fastners is all he needs, arp rod bolts is a good thing and maybe arp studs for the mains. go with a forged piston and he could even put on a 100 shoot of no2.
good gaskets are a must. another word, be careful of those good prices on rebuild kits. while a piston like ross, or je would be nice and $$$ , a trw or speed pro would be fine at this hp level.
upgraded fuel pump go for around $120 and simply replace the current on in the gas tank.
any of the current 5.0 magazines is filled with the information and parts you are looking for, prices are cheap for this stuff but with the list you got going, it a $$$$ project. sounds fun and realistic. be careful or before you now it you will be ordering 2 of everthing.
if you diagree, i can take it just dont start name calling

Thanks for the info. I thought it sounded weird with those injector sizes and the HP figure calculations. We know that it will be some good dollars and I even ran across these when doing some searching ... 4-Valve Heads
They are nice but the one location wants close to $5000 US for them and then I don't know if a stock lower intake would fit. I have to find out if there is any other people who sell these to find out if the prices are legit or not. Would be nice just to rebuild the bottom end and slap these babies on and then see ya later type scenerio.

info on the intake
they can do a package setup with cam heads, intake and throttle body , give them a call and see if its what he is looking for, they could probably give the correct info on the injector size.
