Just wondering what the general concensus on these motors is. What kinda power did they make? How is the fuel mileage compared to a 351 of the same year? Any problems?

"460" and "fuel mileage" cannot be used in the same sentence

If memory serves me correctly, the stock '96 and '97 460 made 245 hp @ 4000 rpm and 400 torque @ 2500 rpm. However, this engine has potential to put much more power than that. But from what I've heard, expect about 8 mpg with this engine.

How about this:
" Anyone who expects double digit fuel mileage from a 460 is blowing smoke up his own a** "

TF is right about the power except I think they had 405 ft/lbs. I had a 96 F-250 with the 460 in it. Let me tell you, it could pass anything but a gas station. I was lucky to get 10 MPG with that hog. Now, I am driving a "fuel efficient" 351

Mine gets 10 MPG. If you get one with a five speed and 3.55 gears you might get 12-13, but that would be pushing it. Mine has all the power I'll ever need. It tows or hauls about every weekend, and it can fry my 33x12.50 tires all day long(without power-braking). The 460 is a good motor, but in my opinion it is outdated. The ford V-10 has more power and gets better milage. And a diesel is the ultimate power and mileage motor, if you can afford it(about 500 ft.lbs of torque and 17-18 MPG).

Thanks guys.

Ten MPG would be easy to live with. The Powerstroke would be nice, but any truck that has one is more spendy than a gas motor. Not to mention most all of the used trucks with the PSD always have damn near double the miles of a truck with a gas motor. Yeah I know its a diesel and it will run forever, but the rest of the truck has the same mileage on it.

I had a '96 4x4 Super Cab, and would you believe 10-12 in the city, and at 70 mph I could sneak 16 out of it. Once I got 17 down hill with a tail wind.(long hill)

Those power figures were correct, with California being around 240 if I remember.

Great truck. I traded it in, and still see it driving around town. Guy that own's it thinks I'm stalking him.lol

mxhotshot, thats cool. Where do you ride around here? Ever get a chance to ride at Albert Lilly's place before it got shut down?

DRN is www.dirtrider.net. Its one of, if not the biggest, dirtbike message boards on the web.
