Airbag Code 2-3 or 3-2

Hey Guys,
the 94 has an intermittent flashing airbag light. Its only happened twice. The light flashes 2 and then 3, or is it 3 and then 2? Either way, the horn has stopped working, it works intermittently.

Any suggestions??

Wes

You have probably lost the clock spring connection in your steering column, just below the steering wheel. Its an actual spring that winds and unwinds as you spin the steering wheel, this spring(more like a coil I think) is what keeps a constant electrical connection for the horn and airbag.

I don't know. I haven't ever had a Ford wheel off. Probably have had 40-50 Saturns wheels off.

My guess is that the steering wheel needs to come off(making sure everything is in the straight ahead position before hand). Unplug the horn and air bag stuff from the clockspring, remove clockspring, put on new clock spring without rotating it, put wheel back on.

The fix is quite easy. I did mine myself. I just went to the dealership and bought the clockspring, then took the steering wheel off as well as the lower portion of the steering column. It has just a couple, maybe three plugs. Just pay attention where your old wires were placed, and you'll be done before you know it. There is a wire that attaches to the key cylinder, but I left that one alone, it was for the door chime, which annoyed me anyway. It took me maybe 20 minutes, half hour, tops.

It will cost $180 for parts and labor at the dealer to have the clockspring replaced which it sounds like thats your problem.

Disconnect the battery first
Any danger in having the aig bag go off in your face, anything else to consider prior to taking the airbag/wheel off?
Thanks,
Ken

It's code 32, and it's your clockspring that needs to be replaced. Here's how:

Removal and Installation

WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FOR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY AND BACKUP POWER SUPPLY. TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY THE BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED FOR A MINIMUM OF ONE MINUTE, BEFORE BEGINNING WORK, TO DE-ENERGIZE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY.

REMOVAL

1) Make sure that vehicle's front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at he 12 o'clock position. CAUTION: Be sure air bag sliding contact internal lock is engaged. Hub should not turn more than 45 degrees in either direction.
2) Disconnect battery to starter relay cable for at least one minute to let the air bag backup power supply discharge.
3) Remove steering wheel.
4) Remove steering column upper and lower steering column shrouds.
5) Disconnect three air bag sliding contact electrical connectors from main wiring at steering column bend bracket.
6) Using door trim removal tool, remove air bag sliding contact electrical connectors from bend bracket.
7) Using door trim removal tool, disconnect two wire harness clips from column. CAUTION: Do not remove wire harness clips from wire bundle.
8) Remove key warning buzzer contact and anti-theft contact from ignition lock cylinder pocket of steering column tube flange.

9) Remove air bag sliding contact by pushing snap back at 6 o'clock position first, then 3 o'clock position, then 12 o'clock position and remove from steering shaft.

INSTALLATION

1) Make sure that vehicle's front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at the 12 o'clock position.
2) Align air bag sliding contact to column shaft and mounting tabs and slide onto shaft. Push on air bag sliding contact to snap three tabs onto steering column tube flange.
3) Install air bag sliding contact cable clips into holes in steering column.
4) Install air bag sliding contact connector retainers into provided holes in steering column bend bracket.
5) Plug main wiring harness connectors into three air bag sliding contact connectors.
6) Install key warning buzzer contact and anti-theft contact into ignition lock cylinder pocket in steering column tube flange. Make sure contacts do not slip out of ignition lock cylinder pocket.
7) Install upper and lower steering column shrouds.
8) Install steering wheel.
9) Connect battery to starter relay cable. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
10) Verify air bag warning indicator operation.
