Need Help !
Was pulling my new boat (see gallery) up to Lake Degray ,Ar. last friday running along about 75mph and all of a sudden blew oil out of my motor all over the exhaust blowing a big cloud of smoke.
I pulled over and looked , seemed to of came out around the PCV valve, i thought nothing of it and continued on at a more conservative speed . spent the weekend at the lake and ran back @ 55-60 mph didnt have any problems . Well now this week if i hammer on it at all like getting on the freeway i start blowing oil and smoking bad . i pull over and turn the motor off for a few minutes , start it back up and drive like grampa and no oil/smoke. So i changed the PCV , Grommet and hose , changed the oil and filter , it now smokes worse then it did and i also got a ticking noise now. I am thinking it is time for a new motor . any suggestions?

have you checked the oil level? the ticking noise might be the valvetrain since its low on oil from blowing it all out (happened to me when my rear main seal went out). sorry i cant help you with your main problem, good luck!
Thanx for the replies . i am also talking to chris about this . here is the email i just sent him in reply .
here is the numbers on the compression test . all were tested at 5 seconds cranking time wide open throttle
# / dry / wet
1 / 130 / 130
2 / 132 / 140
3 / 125 / 155
4 / 145 / 150
5 / 132 / 152
6 / 131 / 136
7 / 140 / 140
8 / 125 / 125
all plugs were normal looking white insulators with tan deposits , no oil .
only thing i noticed is #7 plug had a build up on the electrode.
i rechecked the pcv , grommet and the hose . the hose seemed to be weak and maybe collapsing so i replaced it . took the truck out and stood on it from a stop and within a mile no oil blowing and no smoking until i jammed it to the floor , it downshifted (hit 4500 rpm )and then started smoking , unlike before it stopped smoking as soon as i slowed down and turned around ( before once it started smoking the only thing to get it to stop was to turn the motor off and let it sit a minute). i turned around and went back to work to see if it was still leaking at the pcv, it wasn't but instead had blown oil out the dipstick tube. it wasnt alot of oil but enough to get on the hot exhaust and start burning , i'm sure you will concur that #3 and #5 cylinders are probably the culprits . the rest of the numbers dont bother me and the differences are within specs but a 20 psi increase from dry to wet is alot and suggest the compression rings are bad from my experience . what do you think ? ( even tho i've probably already answered my questions ..lol )

Hi,
I think that you have a problem with excessive compression entering the crankcase, causing the smoke and the PCV to blow out oil.
From reading the results of your compression test I would suggest looking into cylinders #1 and #8. If you notice that the results of the "Wet" test, and dry test are the same, this indicates a loss of compression by the piston. This could be a burned piston, or broken, stuck piston rings, etc.
Before ripping everything apart at this time, try performing a "Leak down test", where you put the compression directly into the cylinder on a controlled level. more often than not you with hear any excessive leakage through the PCV or the oil fill tube.

New long block picked up today . gonna try to stuff it in next weekend . then i'll be back to being able to tow my boat to the lake . ended up having to run a hose from dipstick tube to an oil jug to catch oil , then i'd pour it back in the motor when it got over 1/2 full lol. wont have to do that now ........

I'll admit I've been looking at boats and motorcycles. My wife would prefer a boat. i looked at a 17ft? Bayliner Capri yesterday. Nice but a small (imo) 65hp outboard, it was very nice. But the garage isn't even started yet.
WTF am I supposed to do?
Ray, I have boat envy!

i looked at used boats too . my 175 is fairly large for a 17'7" boat, i decided on a new boat cause of warranties and knowing what it has been through . it was very reasonable $9995 was the base price . i love my boat . with only me in it and by the time the beer is gone i can run about 50 mph .
....great little boat . you would not be unhappy with it . i got a cover for it and added waterproofing even tho i have kept it in my shop at work since buying it other then when at the lake . had it two months when i already had 20 hours on it . i haven't taken it to the lake in a month as my truck motor hasn't been cooperating with me . headed out here tonight to pull it and put a new motor in the weekend and headed to the lake next weekend :-)

Me and my Dad have a 17' Manatee, with a cneter console on a deep V hull with a 70 Evinrude (18 years old and never 1 problem - best engine ever) and we have a 23' Angler with a cabin and a 190hp 4cyl Mercruiser inboard/outboard.
while we are talking boats, my buddy just told me we are gonna take his ski boat out to the lake tommorow, i cant rememebr what the darn thing is (seems like it says Excaliber on the side) but its got a 460 with a whopping cam, torker intake and a 750 holley with huge chrome over the transom headers. I helped put in the cam last summer and its only been in the water once since then. Its got an old Berkley jet pump that is kinda worn out, so it isnt really that fast, but man will that thing throw some roost!

Just a thought
Very nice indeed!
