oil pan gasket ???

I had my truck in the shop and they noticed that I have a small leak on the oil pan gasket. They said that some motors actually have to be lifted to pull the pan off for a new gasket. Does anyone know if this needs to be done for my truck? It's a 94 short bed, regular cab, 4x4, 351w, auto, a/c, w/manual hubs. That should be enough info to describe the truck.

Thanks!

I believe it does need to be lifted slightly to clear the front axle and drop enough to clear the oil pick-up. But the engine doesn't need to be pulled, just lifted off the mounts enough for the pan to go down and backwards.

Yep, gotta' jack the motor, might even need to remove the intake on 351. It just doesn't want to clear the bell housing without lifting the motor. PAIN IN THE *** JOB! Done it twice on 5.0 motor.

I have the same truck as you, but with a 302. They had to lift my engine up a bit and really had fun when they realized that my aftermarket exhaust had been welded on. It had to be welded back on afterwards, of course.

Thanks for the info.

The leak seems to be pretty slow right now so I'll just keep an eye on the oil and if it starts leaking too fast I'll get it fixed.

Unhappy

Like the others said, sorry to tell you but I imagine you do have to jack it. I have a '92 F150 with a 300-I that has has a minor leak. The actual intructions in the manual for a oil pan gasket replacement says, "remove radiator, remove starter, unbolt motor mounts, raise the engine". This combined with a few other problems and I am considering selling it and buying a late model used truck.

Regarding selling truck vs oil pan gasket on 4.9.

If you don't have wrench skills ( and alot of patience ) don't
attmpt this. Just jacking up the engine on the 4.9 will not let
the pan clear. You also don't really need to remove started or radiator. Mine took me about 4 hours I guess. It was worth it.
I don't have a truck payment and I've got 197K+ now.

Just my opinion.
