Which Covers

I am thinking that I will get some new valve covers, and while I am at it get the Crane 1.7 Roller Rockers. Which covers do yall like better? I know the Trick Flows are taller than stock, but I dont know about the FMS. But I have heard that the 1.7s will work with stock covers. Tell me what yall think.

Is there any particular reason you want to go with the 1.7's as opposed to the 1.6's? I've heard from a few people that I should just stick with the 1.6 ratio rocker arms. But to answer your question, as long as they'll cover your rocker arms, I would definitely go with the Ford Motorsport covers! I'm planning on getting those same exact covers when I get my cylinder heads/roller rocker arms. Personally, I think they look classier than the Trick Flow covers.

FWIW the stock valve covers on my Mustang cleared the 1.7 roller rockers with a minimum of surgery. You don't need the taller covers.

Hey Beastie,

Just to quell your concerns, I just installed those very covers on my new 327 which has the Crane/Motorsport 1.7 RR's and it fits with no clearance issues. I put them on with no gaskets first to see if they would touch anything, no problem. I have insurance anyway because my gasket set came with 1/4" thick valve cover gaskets which increase the height, they aren't necessary but that's what I already had so I used them. I got the polished ones and clear coated them with Duplicolor high temp.

Shop around, these suckers aren't cheap!!!

One other thing, the hose nipple on the fill tube that goes to the air box is smaller than our stock hose. No big deal, I found a piece of fuel line hose (I believe 3/8”), placed it over the nipple, then pushed the stock hose over the smaller hose, viola’, all fixed. I don't know if you still use yours or not, but that will work for the stock setup.

Thanks for the info guys. I liked those best to. Now I just need ot figure out how to pull the upper intake manifold. My Haynes manual really doesnt show much. Can anyone scan a better manual like the Ford Shop one, so that I dont screw anything up and jus Email it to me?

BTW Fast Pony Summit has those covers for $144.95 do you know of a better price?

Also when I have the upper manifold off, Iwas thinking about painting it black, how do yall think it would look? I remember seeing it on someguys truck when he did a whole conversion to Mass Air in an late 80s truck, and I thought it looked nice there. Also if I do it, what type of paint should I use?

Don't paint it black. Black objects absorb heat, the last thing you need or want is to absorb more under hood heat into your intake manifold

Technically , most new motors are black and all marine applications are black cause they dissisapate heat faster . i used to think the same way on all the marine motors i installed until a mercruiser technical/mechanical engineer explained it to me .
