Well I have a dilema

My dad still wont let me do certain things ot the truck, especially after the tranny went, but he will let me do electric fans and underdrive pulleys. I would do both, but I dont believe that the factory alt would be able to handle that, ill get to this laterI camr to the conclusion that I will use perma cool fans, dual 14". They only pull 9.5A each, and they move alot more cfm than the Derale 14". This is what I want, maybe yall can tell me what I need. I will get this Wiring Kit to turn on one fan at the set temperature, lets say 170 degrees, but then if that doesnt do the job I want to have the other fan setup to come on like 10-15 degrees higher. I also want one fan to come on whenever I turn on the AC. SO can yall tell me what wiring kits/ relays I am going to need to get this setup. Also these numbers arent necessarily what I am going ot set them at, it was just what popped into my mind.

Onto underdrive pulleys, I would like to use them in conjunction with theEfans, but I think if I was at idle, and the fans kicked on, I would have some charging issues. I could get the ASP pulley set that has a 1 7/8" overdrive alt pulley, but would this be enough to keep me charging at idle?

And just wondering, which will give more of a performance increse, so I can tell what I should do first. I would think the E-fans, because I would be removing like a 13# weight off the engine, but maybe yall can fill me in.

The electric fans are a good idea. I wouldn't want one to come on at 170 though, it would run constantly, and if it was strong enough to keep the truck at 170 degrees it would cause other problems since your truck is designed to run at around 190 degrees. One thing to remember is that when the fans are running they are taking away as much horsepower as your clutch fan, the reason electric fans are good is because they only run when you need them (usually when idling in traffic). I don't know what size alternator you havve but you probably would have charging problems at idle. I have underdrive pully's and electric fans on one of my trucks and night when i'm at a redlight the headlights get dim, then they brighten up when i start driving. You could install a more powerful alternator if you had to.

Here's something to think about... I don't know if it's true for all electric fans, but I was looking at one brand...and it says that they last up to 50,000 miles before they need to be replaced. Somewhere around there, it might have even been less. So one downside to having electric fans instead of a clutch fan is that they aren't as durable.

I don't have an electric fan so I can't do a fair comparison peformance wise, but like I've stated many times before, my pulleys far exceeded my expecatations and I can't imagine electric fans being much more noticeable (my pulleys gave me just as much of a seat of the pants increase as my intake manifold if not more). I know Donate54 has both, so maybe he can provide you with a better comparison.

Thanks guys keep the info coming. I might be leaning towards underdrive pulleys simply because of the ease of the install.

i HAD both, i took off my electricfans because the model i had (which was recommended to me by flex-a-lite techs) did not pullenough air to keep my truck cool in these miami summers (it did fine the rest of the year). i then took the fans off, went back to clutch fans, and left theh pulleys the way they were. i did not notice any performance loss really by removing the fans, but the engine did rev up a lot easier with the electric fans (and the electric ones were much quieter). i guess the fans are a good mod, but they wouldnt be near the top of my list. the pulleys, in the other hand, are great!
