300 6 power increase

i have a 95 f 150. 300 6, 5 spd. 2 wd. i need more power, torque to pull a covered 2 motorcycle hauler. i have replaced the u joints and installed air bags. not sure of what gears are in the rear. what is available on the market that might help for towing? chip, filters, exhaust, ring and pinion? could use about 10% increase at least. if you are wondering about the u joints they where worn and robbing some power. alot of people can't understand it struggling. clutch is good and only has 57,000 miles.

thx, hdridrdude

What you have already said sounds good.
Intake, exhaust, gears should help you with towing. maybe 4:10 gears since you tow.

I'm running 31inch tall tires with 3:31 gears and have a Quad and Dirtbike in the bed almost every weekend and I can honsetly say I feel very little powerloss, my truck sit's a little lower but still runs like a champ.

Gear choice depends on tire size. For maximum towing capability, you want to be at or near your torque peak at highway speeds in the gear in which you tow. If you're running stock 235/75-15 tires and a Mazdog M5OD with a 300 I6, a 3.55 gear will put you at about 2220 RPM at 65 MPH in OD, a bit higher than you'd probably like. A 3.27 or 3.31 would put you at 2050-2070 RPM, almost ideal. If you're concerned about acceleration, you may or may not want a bigger gear. The 300 doesn't always respond as expected to bigger gear ratios.

hey sprocket, nice truck. my tires are 30x9.50 15s. i'll have to check the tag to see what gears i am running but sounds like maybe 3.31 is worth a try. i need a new exhaust so i'll dump the converter and install a freeflow muffler. i also need a air filter and was going to put in a k&n anyway, use them on my bike. my trailer is a bit heavy, add 2 harleys and i'm up around 4000 lbs. what about a super chip, any experiance with these?

thx, hdridrdude

Those tires are a little taller and are going to drop your highway RPM by something on the order of 50 RPM, which makes the 3.55 and 3.31 a more nearly equal choice for highway towing with the 3.55s offering better all around capability and performance.
Your stock gears are going to be either 3.08s (axle code 18), 3.31s (axle code 17) or 3.55s (axle codes 19 or H9). If you have the 3.31s or 3.55s there's obviously no point in changing. 3.08s are purported to be an economy gear, but they don't offer much if any improvement over 3.27-3.55 gears. Your truck will tow as well in 4th with the 3.08s as it would in 5th with 3.73s so the revs may be a little high and it may not have the acceleration which you want.

A lot depends on how and where you drive and how much you're willing to spend for small improvements. Changing gears isn't cheap and you can get decent use out of any gearset
