Got the H.O. Motor. Now what?

Well, I finally finished replacing my 372,000 mile 5 liter in my '92 f-150 with a new (to me) 5,000 mile H.O engine. My truck is now quite stringer than before, but........ it isn't as ballsy as I had hoped. So what do you guys recomend to give me some more punch? Cash is an issue, so try to keep 'em in the realm of reality. Here's what I have to work with:

1992 F-150 XLT
2WD regular cab
Bone stock fuel injection on a stock '92 302 H.O.
Shorty Headers
True dual exhaust, no cats, and flowmasters

Thanks guys

one word, best bang for the buck...

Camshaft

Now go look at the hundreds of cams for 5.0L HO. How wild do you want to go?

OH NO!!! I'm not cracking open that beast AGAIN. Read around and you'll see some of my posts while doing this swap. If I had known that I wouldn't have had the kind of punch I expected, I would have bought a cam while I had the engine on the stand. As of now, I'm looking for mostly bolt on mods. Thanks though!

Okay, I'll bite. What do you recomend? I'm not real sure what I have in it now. I'm running BF Long Trail 10.5 x 31's. Before the swap, the engine used wind up fairly tight before shifting, and now it seems to shift a little short. I understand that the cam specs are different than the truck, and I've been blaming the short shifting on that, so maybe a gear swap is in order. Do you know of a site that I can check my VIN with and find out what my gearing is?

Can't do it on one word. 1.7:1 Roller Rockers They'll give you more lift, less valve train friction, about 10 HP increase with no change in the RPM for peak HP or Torque

Two questions: How much for the rockers? And, will they fit under stock Aluminum HO valve covers?

Rockers is a good idea. The ring and pinion gear will depend on what you do with your truck. Your normal everyday activities. I drive 60+ miles a day so I'm keeping mine at a stock 3.55. Summit or Jeggs is a good place to shop for gears or rockers.

There is a code on your drivers door or door jam that represents your final drive gearing. Post the codes here and maybe we can decifer them.

You can find 1.7 roller rockers on any Mustang web site (ie corral.net, stangnet, etc) for about 100 bones. They were my second mod after my exhaust and made a significant difference. Yes they will fit under your stcok valve cover with no problems

I want to know more about these 1.7:1 rockers. How would they work in my basically stock 5.0 with speed density? my only other mods are exhaust and a K&N panel.

More lift = more HP & TQ. Take your currnt cam lift divide it by 1.6 and then multiply that amount by 1.7 and that is what cam lift will be with the 1.7 rockers.

On a 96 it's .2637" I /.2801" E at the cam or .4219" I /.4482 E at the valve.
The 1.7s change those numbers to .4483" I /.4762" E for a gain of .0264" I / .0280" E.

Your cam is probably different but the gains should be similar.

it does sound like a pretty good idea, and this will work fine with the speed density right? anybody got a good source for them? It looks like the FRPP ones are a good deal. I think the next things on my list are some 1.7 roller rockers and underdrive pulleys! and I just remembered something, my motor isnt an 89, its a 92, the short block was replaced under warranty.

I just found a place in town that has a chassis dyno, im gonna stop in and see how much a couple of runs will cost me. I would have liked to do it before i did any mods to the truck to get a baseline.
