Fuel gauge not working properly

I bought my teenage son a super clean '96 F150 with only 26,000 original miles..... the only problem is with the fuel gauge.
It has dual tanks, and registers just fine on the rear tank. However, when the front tank is full, and the inside switch is flipped over to 'front', it registers empty. Any ideas on how to repair, and if this would be an expensive repair. Thanks for any help.

It probably needs a new sending unit, so you will have to drop the tank. Mine has the same problem, I just set my trip odometer and when it gets around 200-225 miles on that tank, I know its about empty. Tell your son about the site, see if he is interested in posting, we are always looking for more people that love their trucks

the sending unit in the tank is bad. mine does the same thing. i jsut bought a new sending unit they are only about 30 bucks unless you have a connection at the dealership like i do and can get there discount. i got mine at cost only $17. and yes the ONLY place you can get them is at the dealefship
