The "Good" in Religion
The "Good" in Religion
I'm posting this a bit in response to the somewhat negative posts (against Religion) that appeared in another thread.
Read through it, and see if it touches your heart like it did mine: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0...ec1_lnk3|81204
Now, as a disclaimer, just as SSCULLY (a man I consider a friend) posted, I am NOT a member of any "organized" Religion. I was brought up in the Christian Science Church, but found it did not work for me. Regardless, I feel it is incumbent on all of us to respect and honor ALL Religions. To sully them with references to the bad actions of a few, diminishes all of us.
I'd really like to see this forum lose one of its "legs". I think politics are fair game, but, I'd like to stop the diatribe for and against Religion. It is not really a debate, what is happening here. It's just who can shout the loudest.

I personally don't see a shouting match at all. People should be free to debate as long as insults aren't thrown.
I am a firm believer in that if you don't like the ideas/subjects being discussed, don't click on the link again. For this reason, I also think that creating another section just for "Politics and Religion" was unnecessary since they both fall under the category of "General Discussion."
We had these discussions for years when Steve owned the site with little/no problems.

It took me some time to figure out that some people just like to bash other people. Religion is an easy target. So that is where the aggression is thrown. Just goes to show true character.
Bunch of E bullies, the whole lot of them

So, why not stop the Religious bashing (from both sides) that is not a debate at all? *shrug*
Oh, did the link touch anyone like it did me? Are you contributing?

Its really only one type of Religion that is constantly on attack here, all the other forms of religion are usually left alone it seems. To say there is "Religion bashing" isn't quite accurate, it implies that all Religions are being bashed. Anti-Christian Bigotry is becoming a favorite sport of some...
That story is definately touching Jack, at least some good has come from such a tragedy.

Trust me, I am NOT a supporter of Islam. My personal feeling is that it is a "primitive" Religion that is no longer relevant. But, we in this Country, have a Constitution that has, as its FIRST amendment, "Freedom of Religion". As such, we are bound to honor anyone's concept of Religion, or lack of same.
If you discount the 1st amendment, then, what about the 2nd? (Or, the rest?)

The separation helps the moderators keep a closer watch on the typical problem threads and individusals. We could have eliminated politics and religeous threads altogether, but we decided to see if this would help cool things down a bit, and so far it has.

Interestin post.
My take was that in honor of this little girl, and what she stood for, the arguing was considered inappropriate, even though the argument itself may have been a reasonable post.
I'm not sure if your post is also to honor this little girl, or if you want to talk about the subject which was not tolerated at the link posted.
Some things I have noticed in religious discussions between many Christians and those who doubt God are
1) Many Christians have no answer their tough questions.
2) Some Christians instigate hatred. Like this example:
"You are one sick individual*. You are on this earth because God put you here. You need to be put in a mental institute, and while you are there learn how to spell !!!! "
3) Some Christians look to show that God causes everything to occur, and ignoring Satan's existence and influence, or that some times bad things just happen to people, some of whom are good people.
