I have a tow strap rated at 30k lbs. I planned to get a D-ring so that I can attach it to the front tow hooks. What kind of capacity should I be looking at for the D-ring? Should I match or exceed the 30k rated strap? or can it be less?

I honestly do not know the rating but something tells me that at 30k you will pull the hooks off the frame.

after breaking 3 other tow straps i decided to get something beefy.
this thing can stretch 20% so i can ****** people out and the 30 foot length comes in really handy. it was 70 bucks at northern tool

 

I use a 6"x30'. $100 @ TSC and I've had it over 2 years. Hasnt even frayed yet. I've broken everything smaller than a 6" before, So I dont recommend it.

 

I have a buddy that works on the big laker boats here in Canada and he braided me a rope...has never failed me yet...its used with the tug boats he claims, so it must be strong. I'll get a pic

Those are the exact same ones I bought. Haven't had a need to use them yet, but they seem pretty good. Not that aesthetics matter, but I think they look nicer than the silver ones. If you end up using yours some time, post about their performance. Thanks!

Thanks guys, I just wanna make sure I get the correct size and all that. I ordered that ****** strap fro 4wheel parts yesterday, and I'll be ordering the d-rings this week. Too bad the tractor supply here was tapped out of just about everything I went for.

 

i got my dad to bring me home some shackles last week. they are huge. alot bigger than the tractor supply and the ones 4wheeparts sells. i dont know where im gonna put them now lol

 

Will This one fit around the factory hitch? Or how do you mount it?

 

dont know what you mean by "around" the hitch, but you are supposed to attach them to either a tow hook or shackle mount

 

or just drop the pin through a hitch reciever, you know, without the ball mounted on it.

 

Ok I thought I read in this thread that someone was using the threaded part of the d-ring to go through the hitch pin hole (not sure if you inderstand what I mean), I got you though. I'll just pick up one of these

I don't think you'd want to do that. As mentioned before in this post, hitch pins are designed to withstand what's called a shear force. When you have a ball in the receiver, the pin goes through both the receiver and the ball. When a force is applied to the ball, the ball tries to shear off the pin. It's designed to handle that type of force. If you put your tow or ****** strap through there, it's no longer applying a shearing force; it's applying a bending force. Hitch pins and bolts are much weaker in bending then shear. I'm a structural engineer, so I feel like I know what I'm talking about. The only thing I'm not sure of is if they actually make a pin designed for such a use.
