yes, that would be the redneck thing to do. but the best advice as well. just remember tho. the farther you make it thru the less you can be made fun of.

So far, the only real good advice I read was hooking up your tow strap BEFORE going in. Generally, i hook up the rear before hand, and throw it into the bed, but the front works too. You can go all out and do both, but I'd make fun of ya all day if ya did that to come wheelin with us !

Another good tip, air down your tires. How wide of tires do ya have again ? And how wide of rims ? Generally you can air down to about half of what is recommended.

Be smart, and don't be first.

If you don't want to, don't. Don't put yourself into a situation where your hesitation can ruin your truck, or make one mess of a stuck. Do what your comfortable with, and take the hazing of not doing all the big stuff.

Don't hammer the throttle ! With 2wd, your rear will want to dig more, then launch forward. Ease into the throttle. Don't be so pusy-footed your barely move, but find a nice in-between.

Also, before doing anything, buy yourself some dielectric grease and pile it onto any electrical connection that may get wet/muddy.

Be ready to break stuff. Have a plan to get the truck home if it isn't running. If ya can't get it home, then at least have a place you can bring it a LEGALLY work on it.

Don't tear up public lands. Don't drink and wheel, don't be stupid. You not only represent yourself and your buddies, but off-roaders as a whole. Don't give those tree hugging greenies ANYTHING to use against us.

Have fun, take pics.

Like MT said before, Air Down. It helps substantially when hitting the sand.

thank MT these are snowmobile trails for the most part but trucks fit down them. i dont plan on going frist threw anything. we have a like a 32 foot trailer were trailering my buddys 77 F-150 so if we break another truck we can trailer that and drive his home. the only prob i have with wheeling is crap getting on my spark plugs and causeing a mis-fire but i have motorcraft wires now not cheap murrys wires they seem to seal better. Any one know were to get a Pre-filter for my K&N 77 air filter? i just wanna make sure i dont get it soaked. Also i have the Stock 16" rim and i have 265/75/R16 tires there aired to 35psi i belive. lol a few times ive gone mudding i just bomb threw at like 45mph lol The straps on the hooks doesnt build any charcter thoe!!! lol ill take lots of pics were not gonna drink and wheel prob wont drink the whole weekend. Also were taking a ton of tools/air compressor/welder/torchs so if we cant fix it there we got issuses lol

One more question how can i get the breathers for the trans and rear diff up higher? i dont wanna be stuck in water and have it just pour into my newly rebuilt trans. Thanks guys

Sounds like yall are doing it up right ! port-a-welders kick *** and can save you and get you home damn near everytime ! No help with the pore-filter. i am sure any JC whitney, Summit racing, type of places could sell it to ya mighty quick. That, or just a 4 wheel parts type store, they normally have em right there in stock.

I would probably air down to around 15psi or so.

For the breathers, your gunna have to crawl up under the truck. To be honest, I am not sure where yours would be. Normally, they are at the top of the unit, need to get a vacuum line or something on em. Which trans do ya got bud ?

Rear dif is easy enough. There is a breather vent on the top. Usually with a 90 degree bend, so it looks like a 7 sticking out of it. Just get a vacuum line, or any rubber line, slip it over, using a hose clamp to secure it to the breather, then just bring that hose up higher (into the truck bed, into the cab, between bed a cab, where ever ya want ! ) use some Zip-ties to secure the hose, so its not all over the place, and you should be golden.

If ya get stuck, or feel yourself gettin stuck, lay off the throttle, just gunna dig yourself deeper. You can try gettin some weight into the bed, see if that helps, otherwise get a pull out. I don't remember if I read it, but you have tow points both front and rear ??

The only thing I would add, since the advice above is good, is get 4 hay bails and throw them in the back. They'll act as weight and can be used to throw under the tires for a little extra traction. You'd be surprised what you can get out of with a little hay!

I agree with Merc, you are not going to throttle out a 2wd truck with street tires if the mud is even axle deep. All he is going to do it make recovery tougher on the other trucks.

Shifty the bad news is 2wd trucks have to use momentum rather than traction to get through the mud. That is much harder on your truck, but it is really the only way.

Watch the lines of others and do your best to keep the suspension from flexing. Keeping the weight spread evenly over the rear axles will help ensure both rear wheels are doing the job. Get into a situation where you are flexed out and even with a LS you will be spinning 1 wheel helplessly doing no good.

Airing down is another good idea, just watch your clearance. If airing down causes you to drag axle in the mud go back up. Better sometimes to cut to the bottom and find solid ground than float around on the top.

Watch out for splashing water with you open intake, you can damage things quickly that way.

Use the brakes as little as possible as it will cause mud to build up infront of your front tires creating a wall making it hard to get started again.

Dont let your friends pressure you into the big holes, they have rigs built for this, your truck is not

I would say that your buddies are going to end up getting ticked off at you for even coming because either they won't be able to go anywhere cause you Will be holding them back, or they will be pulling you out all day...

I mean going mudding with some stock 4x4's when yours is a 2x4 is one thing but your going with some pretty big trucks that should be able to go thru a lot of muck!

It's gonna be a pain in the ***.....have fun......and take pics like everyone said.

4R70W MT i belive the breather is just on the top of the trans ill look at the rear diff closer to when it comes. i am making a bracket in the front a 2X4 box tube to go frame rail to frame rail and welding 2 D hooks on the tube..*i dont have a lower valance lol* In the back i have a trailer hitch with a ball and i have the 2 holes on the hitch it self. theres not to many really nasty trails up there mostly sandy theres only like 2 mudd holes i aint afraid to tear it up a lil and they wont get to mad they'll just lagh ill take a picture everytime i get stuck for you guys lol. i was with a 4X4 chevy one time and i was going every were he would go with no prob only got hairy in one spot but other than that i was fine. most of the trails are sand.

These ford engines seem to be able to inhale alot of water and still run my buddys 5.0L exploder had water sitting in the air box up to the air filter and the inside of his intake pipe was soaked!!! and the truck ran fine we did this more that once that 5.0L was pretty much a marine engine lol. im going to get a prefilter and wrap my filter so not alot of water gets to it. Anything else i need to check for? Thanks a bunch guys

Let em know where the breather is for sure bud, something good to know !

The only other thing to keep in mind, is to check all fluids after ! Make sure ya don't got a bunch of water in anything (even with breathers !). Also, go through and re-grease anything that might have gotten a bunch of water in it. Bring some WD-40 with you as well. If ya get water anywhere ya don't want it, spray some wd-40 and BAM, water is gone (wd-40 originally was meant to displace water. it is NOT a lubricant ! )

I am not sure if the 4x2 comes with an extended breather on the rear diff. If it does make sure the hose is still intact. If it doesn't make sure you allow enough slack for axle droop. If not you might pull the hose off the barb and allow water into the diff. The 4R70W has a breather on the top of the transmission. Run a hose from there to the inside of the engine compartment. Proper vehicle prep is important and I think everyone has that covered.

Have fun and take some pictures.

Regards

The south side of higgins lake Milltary Road its off of 127 or 427 i cant rember. theres some trails going all threw the woods in there and some trails put you on the back side of Camp grayling Mortar range 13. Theres a few big sand hills were they test there hummers and tanks. the one we play on is like a 45-50* incline lol how far u think my 2WD will make it up that? haha Thanks for all the tips guys i should be goood to go when the time comes. I looked at the breather on my trans and if i put a hose on it can it still open? it has to pop up inorder to work how do i put a hose around it since i cant put a clamp on it?
