After Market for best offroading
I ahve a 97 150 2wd and i was just wondering what i can do to keep up with my friends in mud pits and such. I am new to the sport so detail would be helpful.
put a 6inch fabtech lift
34 procomp xterrain tires
putting exhaust in

go get you a set of tow hooks and a hefty tow strap! If you are going though anything serious you will be getting pulled out! or go get some 4.56 gears and 35" Super Swamper Boggers! They will get though alot even with a 2wd!
The formula remains simple:
Traction+ground clearance = good wheelin
The meanest, biggest set of tires you can afford is what will make the biggest difference. The prevoiusly mentioned SS Boggers are an outstanding choice, and probably are as extreme as it gets. There are some real nice performing mud-terrain tires that might not set you back so far though. Your x-terrains are nice, but are designed to compromise some off road performance for on road manners.
Traction also relies on having all tires receiving power, which means your differentials should be locked, and have big enough ring gears to accomodate your tire size.
Sounds like you might have enough suspension lift, so of you want to be the one who does the pulling, instead of the one getting pulled out, improve your traction.
Have fun!

Throw on the largest M/T's you can with the lift you choose, gears, locker, and call it good!
With a 2WD you need plenty of momentum so hit those holes hard!!!
Here's what i would do:
Forget fixin my daily driver to go wheelin just to break it! Go buy yourself a 4 wheeler, one that has room for a cooler on the back. Buy a cooler fill it with beer, strap it on the 4 wheeler, strap the 4 wheeler to the bed of your truck. Now, follow all your buddies to the "muddin place" , unload 4 wheeler and follow them in. when they get stuck, pull over and enjoy cold beer while they have to crawl out and get underneath a muddy truck to hook up a tow strap! when they are all stuck, you will be the hero cause your truck is back beside the road, not waist deep in mud! and you have cold beer, unless it has already disappeared from the cooler
And, your truck is'nt broke down cause you went wheelin. and you can wheel on the 4 wheeler, or be their trail scout!!
and oh yeah, did i mentioned you can have easy access to cold beer?

Only problem is that a good 4 wheeler is around 7k then add winch and accessories, hell why not just buy a Yamaha rhino!
But in all seriousness get the selectable locker and good tires. I used to have a 2wd and was going to do that plus put a 12,000lb winch on the front. The winch would really help out sometimes and they are only like $700 so maybe a good thing to look into. I may be looking into a 12,000lb winch for my new truck over the summer.

Looks like everyone else has it covered.... go buy some traction aids bud. Maybe buy some regular ole tires... AND a set of Boggers. That way, when you know of a muddin run comin up, you can swap the regular tires off, throw on the boggers and go have some fun. (that way your not wearing them down super fast on street). Also save up for some kind of lockers. Put a detroit in the rear and maybe some type of selectable lock up front. Gears would also be nice to have, along with a stout front bumper and a HEAVY duty winch (prfer a WARN winch) good luck bud! And be sure to post some pics of the truck in action!

I mean the other night I had to move a tree from the trail that was about 3ft in diameter and about 30ft long. Moved it with now problems. The only thing I was worried about was I had the cable out all the way which I know is a no no but I didnt realize it till I started winching cause it was dark out. But it winched it with now problems. Go on ebay and search 12000lb winch and its called the Vortech winch. Comes with a roller fairlead and in my opinion so far, a good deal for $360 shipped.
