a little mud and a big problem

so thursday it rained here so i decieded to go do some wheelin. i had my fair share of fun untill i went to leave. I was stuck up against a tree and couldnt get traction with my front tires to move away from it. i tried every thing i could nothing would work. so i switched from 4x4 hi to 4x4 low.

BAD MISTAKE! i turned the wheel all the way to the right and gave it a little gas to clear out my tires and snap! there goes my cv joint! along with it it took my left front shock. so i was majorly bummed. i worked untillm 8 at night trying to get it drivable so i could get it home but no luck.

I called a tow truck and took it to my local auto shop about 20 minutes away. hopefully it will be done by monday!

4lo with the wheels cranked hard to the side and then you gas it? Heck I barely trust my D60 with 37s to do that. With alloy shafts sure, but not stock......

I never had problems with the stock drivetrain (besides the trans) living on my old 97 F150 with 35s. I just knew better than to stick it in 4lo and gas it with the wheels at full lock.

Damn!! well thats too bad! But I am with Powerstroke on this one 4lo + "gassing" it = broke. Did this in my old Chevy (yes, I too learned the hard way) was in a mud pit and couldn't get up a lip. Put her in 4 lo (1 ton running gears... but 40" meats) and gassed it to get out. Second later a LOUD pop and my tranfer case had completely seperated into about 3 parts and was spitting gears and fluid... bad bad day. Oh well, live and learn right? So where abouts did you go out wheeling? I've been itching to go somewhere close where I don't gotta make a trip outta it.

make sure your wheels arent at full lock when in 4LO and gassin it...giving it gas in 4LO is fine otherwise, but just think about the situatuion your in before gassin it in 4LO lol

exactly what cowboy63645 said. My chevy was up against a lip in a mud pit, tires couldn't spin, so the weakest link gave way. If there is nothing that will cause any binding, you will be fine. Generally 4HI will be better in a mud pit. It will allow for higher rpms and allow your tires to spin and "self clean" .

OUCH! that must have hurt. Back where i used to wheel, on one of the trails, you had to use a tree to turn and get into(or out of, depending on the approach) a place. put the left front bumper against the tree, put it in 2wd and gas it, spinning the rear end around!!

That sucks bud.Not a cheap repair either. But yes as stated 4lo and wheels turned all the way binds the cv's to much and risk breakage.I never broke a cv on my 99 with 38's and I offroaded it a lot in mud and sand dunes.Just gotta learn what you can and can't do.I use to run 44's on my 78f150 with a 1/2 ton front axle so I learned quick what I could and couldn't do.

4lo own3s me. I snapped an axle shaft in my solid axle chevy trying to straight up a bit hill. It was costly to say the least.
