Intake after muddin'

I have the K&N CAI system on my truck. After I get back off roading there is always dust and acouple globs of mud on my exposed filter. Is it alright if I just take a hose and wash everything off the filter AFTER I REMOVE the filter? Or will this strip off all the oil on the filter? I've only done this twice and always see the oil slick on my driveway from when I washed it and don't want to over oil it because I've heard some bad stories.

Gently knock off the mud and reinstall it. Keep with the regular cleaning schedule. These filters actually filter better when slightly dirty.

Use a pre-filter.
