worst stuck pics lets see em!?!?
check out engo winches, pretty good prices and i have only heard positives about them so far. Seem to be growing popularity on a couple offroad forums i've been on. If i remember right, the guy who makes these used to be the CEO for mile marker IIRC.
what ever you get, look into synthetic winch line. weighs nothing compared to cable (17 lbs vs 2 lbs for what i'm running), when it snaps it drops, don't have to worry about wearing gloves and getting stabbed with the metal, etc. cable is fine, but synthetic is a nice little upgrade which you can usually do at the time of purchasing a new winch to cut down on the price difference. The main reason i went with it is i restored a warn 5687 and it does not have power out so i didn't want to have to pull a 17 lb cable every time on the trail.

If using the right size chain you are probably right, chances of breaking it is slim. But, when it does break something else is going to be destroyed whether it's a window, body panel, or a person. It's not worth the risk.
is your grandpa pulling vehicles or is he pulling logs and things around the farm? there is a huge difference from 500 lbs and a 6k lb truck + the suction in mud or what ever the vehicle is trying to get over. Easily i bet you will be at 10k force the truck is pulling against.
a strap is no more expensive than a chain and MUCH safer. I refuse to pull any body that hands me a chain. They will stay stuck until they hand me a strap, or i will hand them my hi-lift to get themselves out if my straps not on me. I do anything i can to keep myself and any other person safe with me offroad and not using a chain is one of my one major rules i refuse to break.

With that being said though, I personally have a 20,000 lb strap that I use whenever possible instead of chains. Whenever I get stuck and have a say, that's what I'm using.

this isnt that bad but embarrassing!!! i was only maybe 500 feet away from home... right across from where i live is a desert and since i was being brave i decided to go in to the sand knowing that i would get stuck because its extreamly soft sand!!! anyways i was in the dunes for a good 30 to 40 mins without a problem except until the very end =/ (drastic sounds right about now) i was maybe 15 feet from getting on the road and there i go deep into the sand i go!!! everyone was just watching me as they passed by until this one guy pulled over and tried to pull me out but failed then a bronco just came in pulled me right out!!!.

just out in the woods yesterday not trying to even get dirty I was just cruising around, testing a new scope I put on a 22 when I came on a really soft spot, by time I put it in 4x4 I was sitting on the frame up front and spent quite a while digging with a shovel, not stuck to bad but stuck unfortunately

all the mud holes and crap I've gone threw and I get stuck doing nothing
was real soft clay though , bfgs handeled it like it was ice -_-

I'm hoping to get myself stuck somewhere soon. I just got a new bumper and a winch, so I gotta test out the setup. It should be this weekend I'll test the winch and bumper (since the bumper had to be welded partially to tabs bolted to my frame and I didn't do the work) in a controlled environment to ensure the system can handle high loads, then I'll get stuck somewhere to put my stuff to the real test.
Sorta stuck. Could have backed out of it if i really wanted to but it was getting tippy (look at back driver tire) so i just decided to hook up the winch and be done with it.

x2 this is my favorite thread on the site I always check for more pictures, after I finish lifting my truck I plan on personally adding a few pages
this was pre-lift on 22's. could probably do it with no problem now. might try it this weekend.
at the right angle it looked possible.

but i missed

rope broke the first time.
