Skid Plates
Well, all the skid plates are on!
As for the front plate, all the clips are the same size, but the back ones did look a little short. Upon analyzing the schematic, I notices to little plastic plugs that cover the holes for the clip that hold the back edge of the plate. I popped out the plugs and inserted the clips... wala! However, they shorted me to clips (by giving two clips that are the right length, but have the the wrong size hole) so I have it held on temporairily until the new clips arrive on Tuesday. This plate is defnitiely worth it and I recommend it to anyone who does not have them. If nothing else, it protects those trans-cooler lines and keeps crap of the bottom of your engine.
I went on and made my own plate that bolts to the two side holes on the skid plate to cover that access hole in the middle, and stood it off with 1 washer on each side. This prevents even more crap from splashing up/going through, still allows for drainage, and is easy to remove for access.
The transfer case skid plate went on without a hitch.
The fuel tank skid plate was a major PITA! Both straps had to be removed and replaced with ones that had studs on the bottom to bolt the skid plate to. The front one was very easy, but the back was a different story. It would have gone a lot easier if the tank was completely dropped and the rear drive shaft was removed.
I supported the tank in three spots with jacks/stands. I bent the crap of the rear one to get it off, and had to do a lot of fanagling and 'convincing' to get the new one on. After an hour, offending the neighbors, and creating a few new curse words, the straps were on. Then it was a simple process of four nuts to hold the skid plate on. although this plate was pricey, it was worth it... especially after seeing a guy at the dealer drop almost $600 for a new tank after some road debris wen tthrough his!
I followed that with a good wax job for winter. All I have left to do is wax the wheels which I will do tomorrow and clean up the wife's Expedition for winter as well.

Holly friggin shat. I went to look for the "plugs" you talked about to mount the front skid plate. I gotta stop letting 6 people look at my truck before I do a mod. I finally went to look at it for a decent amount of time and about kicked myself for not seeing that. It installed in about 5 min. with just me and a jack.

I didn't request black, but all three of my skid plates were black (the fuel tank is black plastic). I orginially got a plain metal (not black) but it didn't. When I took it back the normal parts guy noticed I had been given the wrong one... the correct one was black!
SCRIPT - I will post the part no. off the plate itself and on the receipt so that you can call and get a quote from your dealer. Since both me and FoMoCoFan have gotten black and we are in different states, I would assume that black is the standard. I will post the P/N information later tonight or tomorrow.

I would really appreciate that, please give me all the numbers and info you have. I want to go down and talk to them and make sure mine will be black as well before I place my order.
Here is the skid plate part number information as discussed. Enjoy!
ALL INFORMATION LISTED IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND APPLIES ONLY TO MY 2006 FORD F150 SUPERCREW XLT 4X4 WITH THE 5.5ft BED. P/N's AND PART REQUIREMENTS MAY DIFFER FOR OTHER CAB STYLES, BED LENGTHS, TRIM LEVELS, MOTOR VARIATIONS, AND DRIVE TRAIN (e.g. AUTO/5-Speed OR 4X4/4x2). THIS IS ONLY WHAT I HAD FOR MY INSTALL.

Also, some of the bolts/nuts/clips come in packages of 2 or more. The quantity listed here is the amount of bolts/nuts/clips required for the partiuclar skid plate.
NOTE: You will need to replace both tank straps to add the rear skid plate. The new straps have bolts embedded in the strap that the skid plate slips over and that the four nut&washers go onto.
All P/N's came off my receipt and off the Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPD) that the parts guy gave me and labeled for me. The IPD's were labeled at the top left with the following information:
2006 F6 Section 5020615 (This shows the Front Skid Plate)
2006 F6 Section 2040210A (This shows the T-Case Skid Plate)
2006 F6 Section 3100105U (This shows the Fuel Tank Skid Plate)
Finally, the Front Skid Plate and the T-Case Skid Plate were black metal, while the Fuel Tank Skid Plate was black plastic. I didn't request them this way, this is how they came.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I have seen a few, but not sure who made them.
I am not supporting the dealers here, but many aftermarket plates do not appear to be as tough, well designed, or as good a skid plate as the factory ones do.
I would personally recommned the factory ones first. Even on my old '98, I chose to pick up the factory ones over the aftermarket. That was six years ago, and even now, the factory ones are heavier and better quality.

I have only seen aftermarket skid plates for the front...

Thanks again,

No problem. Always glad to help out when I can. I think the biggest difference that you will notice will be on the tank skid plate if that is what you are getting as well. Everything else should match-up I believe.
The clip-nuts are my name for the nuts that stay in place. Kind of a U-shap with an etra little middle bit. Kind of a modified clip. Hard to explain, but will look familiar when you see it. It is literally a clip with a a nut/thread portion that is integrated.
Lastly, I corrected my earlier post. The IPD number were in the upper left, not the upper right corner.
As for the front skid plate, remember to look for the little plastic plugs that cover the holes for the clip that hold the back edge of the plate. I simply had to pop out the plugs and inserted the clips. Yours should be the same or very similar.
Let me know what you find out.

I noticed something today about these infamous 'black' skid plates.
I went to the dealer to pick up my two previously missing clips. However, before I left, I crusied the lot to check out the goodies. Well, curiostiy got the best of me.
On all of the FX4's, Lariats, and high-end XLT that had the skid plates, most were silver/bare metal. However, I did find one with black skid plates. The only differnce I could find other than the color of the plates was the build dates of the trucks listed on the door (door jam) sticker.
Basically, all of the ones built earlier in 06 had plain metal skid plates, those that are more recent, say within the past 2-3 months had black skid plates. I tried to verify this with the parts folks, but they couldn't get any color details from the parts breakdown.
Based upon what I found, I would say that the black plates are simply the newer version of the skid plates. Same design, new color.

Today I was calling around and at one dealership the automated voice actually gave me two options for parts. It could connect me to retail or wholesale, so I said what the hell and pushed the button to connect me to wholesale.
The guy I got connected to seemed like he knew what he was talking about, when I asked him what color the plates would be he replied “well, probably standard black” I just though it was kind of peculiar that he would spout that out when NO ONE ELSE I had talked to knew anything about the color.
Any way I think this further confirms Lightings findings that black is probably the new standard.
I was able to find the front plate for $108, and the transfer case plate for $48. But I never found the fuel tank plate for anything near what you guys found it for. I think the cheapest was like $175.
So I ended up just buying the front and TC plate, I feel I got raped on all the mounting hardware, it cost me about 40 bucks just for those two plates but oh well, those two are on there way now and I might just forget about the fuel tank plate.
They had the Front plate in stock so ill include a pic, I still have the TC plate and some of the mounting hardware to come on Monday.

I made a filler plate to cover that gaping hole in the front of the skid plate. I stood it off with one wahser for drainage and air circulation and painted it black. This is just a little bit more protection for the nasty winters that we have up here.
Congrats on the new plates. Just remeber to pop out the two little black plugs on the crossmember when installing the back clips and bolting it on. The caps are on INSIDE edge of the boltholes, and the clips slide in from the inside toward the outside.

Earnhardt Ford? I always thought Dale jr. secretly wanted to drive for for ROUSH.
