Off Road Vacation
Off Road Vacation
Ok I have my brand new 4x4. I want to take a mild off-road vacation with some camping mixed in. I have little to no experience. I plan to take my 1 year old daughter, so I dont want to compromise our safety.
I am in SE louisiana, Mandeville (new orleans). I want to stay in the south. I dont know how much of a road trip I can take with the little girl. She went to texas and Georgia when she slept most of the day, but I dont know about now.
Anyway, how do I find such a thing. Oh yeah, it has to be LEGAL. I searched the web, found a bunch of pay for info sites and a lot of dead links.
Something intersting along the way wouldnt hurt.
I have a stock 4x4, need something with fairly easy departure and approach angles and dont want to get stuck. No winch either.

yeah kinda depends how far you want to travel. Mississippi should have something. DOn't know anywhere like you want in LA my mom lives in mandeville......well until she got married last week and moved to pearl river.
Magazine Mountain, Arkansas. Literally thousands of acres of national forest open and free to all. Lots of places to camp. You can go to a camp site or just set up a camp anywhere off the beaten path. I've offroaded all over the mountain. Take your GPS, otherwise you'll probably get lost. It's about 30 minutes from Interstate 40. I think Cingular has phone service there if you get stuck.

PS: Visit the top of the mountain first. There is a really nice Park Facility on top with a 3D map of the mountain. Ask around a bit and the local park ranger can tell you where to go for mild off-roading. There are literally hundreds of miles of roads, gravel trails, old logging paths and hunting areas scattered around the base of the mountain.

I like both of those places. The one in arkansas looks really nice.
The one in mississippi is very close, but it looks very intense. Is there anything there for an unexperienced off-roader in a stock truck?
What sort of establishment is in Lafayette? Is it a state park, or a private facility?

red creek is a nice place to have fun and from the pictures i have seen, it is not all 2 foot deep ruts with bottomless pits in them. there are parts for lower trucks too i think
