Anyone an expert on sand driving...

I do not know if my truck is too damn heavy (04 FX4 super cab), not enough experience or just not the right tires but everytime I go to the beach I get stuck in the sand when it gets a lot uglier. Any tips for what kind of tires I should be using or how fast I should be driving. Is the fastest way to get yourself out to use your 4*4 low and slowly get out?

I never have any trouble in the sand



Just air your tires down to 12psi and have fun. Don't do any hard sharp turns, and stay on the gas! You really dont need mud/sand tires to have fun (but it doesn't hurt to have them)

1. Maintain your speed (momention is key)
2. Dont Brake (coast to a stop)
3. Avoid turning as much as possible
4. Airdown your tires

I have an 05' FX4 SCAB and drive the beach all the time.
4X4 hi and don't lose momentum does the trick for me.

i just took my truck on the sand for the first time last weekend. Went out without airing down,then got out there and decided to air down. Made a huge dif. i went down to 15 p.s.i. I just left it in 4hi to avoid starting to spin. cause once you start spinning its hard to get traction. And i feel momentum is the biggest thing to have behind you. just stay cruising . I have 35" bfg muds and i thought they did great after i aired down.

what year is that, and do you have a body/suspension lift?

I really like your truck, and want to copy your setup

Well, I'm no expert. But , I've never got stuck on the beach. I use Oasis Automatic Deflaters to Air Down all the tires equally to 15psi. Once you get them set up it's a snap!

Hey thanks man,
thats an awesome looking truck looks just like mine except you got the right kind of tires. That also looks a lot like the beach I go to (South Padre Island, TX) except it could get really ugly once you keep heading north.

I used to go out to Pismo all the time with my old truck, and I along with all the advise given already I'd like to throw in the type of tires that work best in the sand. Unless you're going to throw some paddle tires on the rear your best bet is a less aggressive tire. You want floation, you don't want to dig at all.

All terrain type tires generally excell in the sand.

Just a side note if you get stuck in sand , air down the tires AND pour water in front of your tires to firm up the sand enough to get going.

PS don't stop until you get to firmer ground. Then try out the aired down tires. Be careful if you have larger rims.

i grew up in daytona and been driving and pulling people (idiots) out of the sand because they never do any of this. plus easy and quick way to make beer money back in the day before i had to get a real job

So you mean everything I saw on Baywatch wasn't real?

Well, while the tah-tahs may not have been, the trucks definately were. Soft tires with a broad footprint on a lightweight Ranger all makes for great sand performance.

usually when in the sand, you dont want a mud terrain tire, or something that is going to dig you in, large footprint that keeps you on top of the sand is the goal. I too have heard great things about the trxs sts's for in the sand.
