Sand

Hey all! I am new here and have a question about driving in the sand (Assateague Island VA). I plan to drive on the beach while I do some surf fishing this summer. Do I need to lower my tire pressure or wait until I am stuck to do it? The owner’s manual says your not supposed to but the beach rules say you do. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

i used to live in s. georgia (lots of sand, everywhere)

by the time you are stuck in sand, airing down will do no good. air down before you leave pavement (8-10 lbs), also rinse off the brake rotors and the rest of the underside of the truck, because sand is high in sodium content which causes rust.

yeah..i know, when i first heard that i thought it was crap too, but $600 later, i was washing my rotors everyday

It depends on the situation. Where I drive in the sand, I don't need to air down if I don't do anything stupid.

Until you know your truck and the area you're 4-wheeling in, you should air down. If yoiu wait until you get stuck, it might already be too late.

Thanks for help. It looks like I will be airing down. I would hate to waste my time digging out when I could be fishing!

The kind and size of your tires will play into how much you have to air down. But like mudslingerford said do it before you are in the sand. It is WAY harder to get unstuck once you are then to prevent it in the first place.

i wouldnt air down more than about 12 PSI, i would bring a shovel and some peices of heavy duty box with you if you do dig yourself in you can use the shovel to dig a path and the box to put under your tires to get traction to get you unstuck, you can also use your floormats in a pinch but it will most likely ruin them, good luck
