4x4 low
Driving any distance on dry hard surface in 4WD can cause dangerous binding in your transfer case. Every time the vehicle turns, the front and rear drive shafts turn at different speeds, yet they are physically locked together in the transfer case. These trucks are 4WD, they are NOT full time 4WD that has a bias agent (like a differential) between the front and rear drive shafts.
Use 4WD in low traction situations only or something will break.

Straight line drag racin is fine for 4hi, but just like desparado said tight turns where a tire can't "give" everyonce in a while on snow, mud, grass, etc is hard on your driveline.
Ya'll think this ESOF is cool now, but wait a few more years when one of the five parts or so to make it work fails. Gimme a manual transfer case and manual locking hubs. If the linkage is lubed and the transfer case fluid is actually changed for once, there should be no "wrestling" to get a manual to engage.
Josiah, it doesn't slam out of 4hi to 2wd and you are perfectly fine there. It "slams" into 4wd, but being shift on the fly transfer cases they can take it. I like to be stopped anyway though.

I have a 2004 FX4 Supercrew. I have spoke with two other guys I work with and they have told me the same thing. On a few occasions, they have gotten in their truck and the 4x4 **** is moved.
I think there is an issue here that Ford needs to look into.

When I complained about it, they said I turned the wrong ****. What do they know?
