Is anyone waterproofed?
ford-tough1,
My 00 is in and I checked the Carbon canistor thing. notirT is right there is a box in the rear. Lower the spare and go have a look. The box is rectangular and has " TO CARBON CANISTOR" embossed on it. One end has a hose and the other end is open. Get some hose and connect to that end and route it to higher ground.

just get a submarine or a hummer, or join the reserves and drive the armys! a stock army hummer will drive through 6' of water with no problem.

THey cost too much and I wouldn't want to put 30K miles a year on either one. I had my 79 handling 4' of water easy but it is a different truck than this computerized electronized gizmo.
hummer through 6' of water? Those things arent even 6 foot tall and most of em has a top on em. What do the passengers do if they go into water that deep...hold their breath? hehe I just know i wouldnt want to take a $70,000 piece of equipment no where near 6 foor of water. I wont even take my lifted $30,000 truck near 3 foot of water and it has more ground clearance than a hummer

Jeez Louise,
If you're serious about having a dependable 4x4, DON'T EVEN TRY to modify your late model truck, You will spend so much time and money
trying to keep it dry (and replacing things you ruin and towing bills) you could have set yourself up with a early model 4x4, (no computer, less problems)
A side note about the hummer, Unless your differential clears the ground by 18" you don't have more ground clearance than the hum-vee, Look under one next time you get a chance, Nothing hangs down below the frame.

hotratz, I had a 1979 4x4 setup for the mud. Check it out http://www.angelfire.com/ia/fordtough
I put alot of highway miles on a truck and alot offroad. I needed the best for both worlds. This truck I have now does not wonder all over the road, has a/c, and 18 mpg. The 79 had a best of 8 mpg. On weekends I drive 4 hours one way, to get home. I wouldn't want to do that in my 79. But I never know when I am going to need 4x4 capabilities, so I got a "streetable 4x4" and was wondering how I could make it reliable in the mush. I know you have the technical definition of ground clearance, but I think david was just referring to the fact that his truck is higher than a hummer.
David I have had my stock truck in 2.5-3 foot of water.

It is going to be quite a chore to get the best of both worlds, In my early offroading days I thought I could maintain a vehicle that not only got a fair share of abuse off-road, but was also expected to get me back and forth to work, It seamed that the more I made it off-roadable, the more the streets tore it up. After about 3 years of fighting it, I decided it was fruitless and have since built a trailer for my off-road toy and bought a new truck (4x4)to pull it to and fro'
From your post, I'm getting the idea that you want to do some serious off-roading. If so, a seperate (trailered) vehicle is what you want to get into, If you just want the ability to get out of the occational off road jam. The truck you presently have is probably set up pretty good. (keep those puddles under 3 feet deep)

I have a question for all you off-road junkies, that like getting there trucks dirty. Does anybody know of any specific procedure or possible kits that can be bought to extend the vent tubes on the differentials, so water and other substance don't drain in. I know the rear vent is routed from the axle housing up to the structural member for the box, but I'm not sure where the front diff vent is routed.

Just wondering where you guys find all this deep water, guess not in NJ eh? Best I've found in here are some old muddy offroad courses (which I've completely drenched my truck w/), nothing steadily deep though...
