Weird Noise - Help?

Need help diagnosing a noise on my vehicle. I'm going to try and explain it the best I can. It seems to happen when I slow down, only. It is coming from the rear of the vehicle. It sounds almost like rubber squawking, but a deep tone. Definately non-metallic.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

John

Question

Have you removed the brake drums to see if you have some brake hardware floating around inside of drum? Are there any visable oil leaks? Is your truck 4 X 2 or 4 x4?

My truck is 2WD. Just had the brakes serviced about a month ago. No change on the rear, just a cleaning and adjustment.

It make the sound whether I'm braking or not. Wonderd if it was in the rear pumpkin or maybe the driveline. No visible leaks. The rear was just serviced about 6 months ago, no leaks around the cover. I do have a trick flow cover with the bearing cap studs, could that be causing the rubbing noise?

I can't see were the cover would have anything to do with the noise. Have You checked the lube level? A friend of mine did a complete drain & fill on his 8.8" in rear of his Bronco and soon burnt-up a wheel brg. (noted by a low speed scraping noise which ended-up leaking @ the axle seal.

The proper way to re-install the lube (after complete drain): fill diff. with both wheels level. Jack up one side & wait for 4 or 5 minutes, bring vehicle back to level and top off lube. Repeat this procedure for the other side.

Do You get any noise @ higher speeds? If so, is the noise present on acceleration, de-acceleration, or coast. If noise is present on coast, examine axle brg's. & diff. side carrier brg's. (cones & cups on diff. carrier).

Excessively dry u-joints normally "squeak" @ low speed.
