Post 3.08 gears

I want to change from 3.55 to 3.08 gears. I don't tow or haul heavy items just carry ladders and small tools.

I own a 97 Expedition with 3.08 gears and it runs 65mph @ 1700rpm. My 97 F150 4.6 V8,3.55g,4spd auto,lb,sc, runs 65 mph @ 2100rpm.

Can any one explain whats involed in switching these gears?

Question

Well CadGuy, I have 3.73s and at 70 MPH I'm only running 2150. I don't see how your getting 2100 rpms at 65 mph with 3.55s
...??
Yes, I have had my speedo and tach checked out..

Hi Cad Guy;
I just made the opposite change to my F150. The gear change is not too bad a job to tackle by yourself if you are prepared. If you read my post from Sunday June 24, (3.08 to 3.55 gear change complete) you can see what is involved. Don't tackle it yourself if you don't understand what needs to be done or if you don't feel confident that you can handle it. Preparation and patience are critical to making sure that the job is done right. Post a reply to my gear change thread if you have questions.

For the difference between cadguy and dogcam, the tire size is probably different, accounting for the RPMs being similar at different speeds. (ie: cadguy has smaller tires) Something to think about...

I know this reply does not address your question -- but, why don't you offer to swap entire axle assemblies with someone who wants to have the 3.55?

Cool

Actually, I have never fished Mille Lacs - but not because I'm a bad Minnesotan. Our family has a cabin up on Lake Vermillion way up north. I get all the fishing I could ever want there. Either way - good fishing!

Y2k--good idea and I am glad you agree...I suggested this before but no one was interested...

We could even get two people together on this board who want each others diff. and get them to switch....

We have to be careful because glenn doesn't agree with this philosophy....

I have to give Glenn some credit--he is a little careful about explaining how imporatnt it is to set it up right and that it is an advanced mod not for everyone though...
