Question Weird sounds from rear end!

I am getting a jingling sound from my rear end, mostly when i hit bumps or if i go to slow in to high of a gear. Brought to the dealship and took the tech for a ride he said he heard the noise. Left the truck for them to look at and to fix a couple other things. When i picked it up they said the noise was not pronounced enough to pinpoint,i told them it had steadily gotten worse since i first heard it about 1 month ago. I thought it might be the exhaust but i just had mine changed to a Gibson Side Swept and the noise is still there! I even lowered the spare and took it off to see if it could be the problem still made the noise. Has anyone else had this problem? I have the 3.55 open, any help will be appreciated.

Maybe something hanging off one of the spring packs? I had a busted leaf on my Ranger once that wwould jingle over bumps... tha clamp on the end of it to keep it aligned also prevented it from falling off. Drove me nuts for months!

Now, as for the dealer, "Not Pronounced enough to pimpoint"?!?! My ****! If they can hear it, they can find it. It could be something critical like the bolt for the gas tank working it's way loose, or something minor like a rock that got wedged up inside something rattling around. They should have a set of electronic "ears" they can hook up to the chassis and drive it to track it down. Sounds like they just gave up... NOT acceptable service in my book. Been down that road with them before.

GIJoeCam thanks for the reply i checked the leaf springs didn't see anything wrong had a couple friends get on the bumper and jump up and down to see if anything was lose. My first thought was u-joints but the tech said he could not find anything wrong with the drive train. He said they drove it and put it on the rack and ran it through the gears but still nothing. They told me if it got worse to bring it back and they would check it again without making me pay my deductible on my ESP plan. So i guess i will have to wait and see they have always given me great service in the past i hope they continue to!!

Could it be a heat shield on the catalytic converter(s)? My Ranger did that... Also along those lines there is sometimes a heat shield on the top of the muffler and occasionally the welds pop on that, letting it jingle a bit. On my Probe, one of the collars on the flex-pipe came off, and it jingles like a bell... I've got a couple other ideas, but I was wondering when EXACTLY it does it? (e.g. on shock compression or on the rebound, is it worse at certain speeds or RPMs, etc)

any details you can give, and anything you've positively eliminated would be helpful.

Question

GIJoeCam
Thanks for your continued help,it happens mostly on shock rebound. I haven't checked the shields on the cats yet but i will.I have eliminated it being in the leaf springs and the u-joints and from the exhaust, after the cats. It mostly happens at speeds under 35 or 40 and mostly under 2500 rpms but sometimes up to 3000. And sometimes in will do when there are no bumps in the road if go to slow in too high a gear. Any way thanks for all the help.

Exclamation

Perhaps a broken muffler baffle (internal). Whack the muffler with your hand and listen to hear if there's a clanking noise. I have heard of this before and it would rattle at certain rmp which would send a resonant frequency through the exhaust and make for a constant mettalic rattle, but on shock impact there would be only a single clank noise. Give it a try!
