Gears
Gears
It's a long story but I may have to take my truck into a professional to re-align the gears in the rear Ford 8.8 of my truck. So I started thinking, maybe I should just have them put in new gears instead because they say the price is the same either way. But then I started thinking that it probably isn't a good idea to change the rear gears but not the front. Is this a correct assumption? Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.
I got an idea, don't know if it a good one. Anyways go ahead and have whatever gear you would like put in the back, then disconnect (pull fuse) for the 4x4 system, then when you have the extra $ have the front done and put the fuse back in.
*laugh* That would work but I dont think I can go that long without being able to four wheel. And I do have money, I just dont know if its the best route to go. But then again, like I said, I do have 3.08 gears *gag*.
Like I said it wasn't one of my best ideas but it was a solution. I wouln't want to be without my 4wd for more than a week. Around here you never know when you will need it. I understand about the money thing. I have enough money to do both front and back if needed but still that's a lot of money. 3.08's in a 4x4 would suck.
I would hate having 3.08's sometimes I dont like my 3.55's and wish I had 3.73's. I see you are in Boulder, where are you thinking of taking it. John's 4x4 is suppose to be really good at all that aftermarket stuff and he is up there somewhere also in Ft. Collins.
Good to see another Rocky Mountain guy in here, even if you are in Boulder ;>

I'm still looking for a place to take it. I really dont like John's 4x4 because they overcharge/overprice just about everything. I'd be looking at The Four Wheeleror Pinson Automotive perhaps

I decided to change the gears and not all at the same time, the back went on first and then I finally did the front 6 months later and then went out to tear up the dunes in four wheel and snapped the napa u-joint that I just replaced and took out the stub and axle shaft at the same time, so I pulled the hub and took the axle shaft out in the sand and plugged the tube and went back to 2wd and smoked many people that were in 4wd and stayed in 2wd for another 6 months until I got a new axle shaft and stub.
Ummm okay. Interesting story. Anyway, I think I'm going to shell out the $1200 or so and get new gears installed in both the front and back. I'm looking to improve my 3.08 ratio to 4.11. I figure $500 for gears and $700 in labor. *gulp*
I've got 3.31's (3.01 with my 33" tires) in my 4x4 Expy, so I'm checking around too for a decent deal on 4.10's. Looks like $1,200 is about as good as it gets for my 9.75/8.8 setup. I have the dinero to do it, but have a hard time justifying the expense...especially all at once. Plus I'd like to a a "posi" unit installed simultaneously, but that's another $500. OUCH.

Since John's 4x4 wanted $1775 to do it, I went down to Westminister and talked to the folks at 4-wheel Parts Wholesalers. They'll do it for $1377. Quite a savings, although they can't fit me in until May 2nd. I can wait if it means saving some bucks
