I did it on my '97 4X, the gear is located in the transfer case drivers side rear on my vehicle. If yours is a 2X it will be at the rear of the transmission usually on the drivers side. There will be a plug with about 4 wires on it near the tail shaft. There is only one screw holding the gear in the trans at the end of the plug, if I remember correctly 3/8 in size. When you pull it out all that holds the gear on is a metal clip.

If you haven't decided what gear to use yet, they go in 5% increments. You will have to count the teeth on the original one and do the math. I think the sizes available were 16 teeth to 21 teeth and cost is about $10.

Hope this helps.
