I also have an 01'SCREW with the thumping. The dealer replaced the rear tires and is going to replace the rear but it does sound like something in the drivetrain and the dealer agrees. It is going in tomorrow. I will post a follow up. Anyone with any advice in the meantime would be appreciated.

Unhappy '01 Rear Thumping under light braking

I have an '01 Screw with ~16k mileage. It has developed a thumping coming from the rear when slowing down with light pressure on the brakes. I can apply power, while braking, and the thumping stops. Thumping slows as speed drops, sounds as if it is related to wheel rotation. Any ideas? I'd like to have an idea before taking it to the dealer.

Exclamation

I have a 2001 F-150 and have a thump once in awhile when braking. I'm taking it in 2 days from now. It has 400 miles on it!

Well my dealer discovered a "bur" on the pinion gear that was causing the thumping sound while decelerating. They are replacing both the ring and pinion gears. I will update tomorrow whether or not this was effective. I will say that the techs at this dealership have historically been right on with thir diagnosis..

UPDATE: The dealer replaced the ring and pinion gears and viola!! No more noise at all. The gears exhibit no sound at all. This is the way it should be. Good luck Rustyscrew...

Angry

Took the Screw in today, clunking has gotten worse (or maybe I'm hyper-sensitive about it), service rep has said this noise is normal?? I have real hard time believing this.

Larry K F - any luck with your dealer.
