Post Annoying Cruise Control Condition

I know, you guys are going to kill me. Everytime I read something that is wrong with my truck that I didn't know about before it really peeves me! Here I am, gliding along happy about the truck until wham! Someone starts talking about the door crack. Well, I never saw it until it was mentioned here

Well, here may be another one. Have you ever left you foot on the gas pedal when the truck was on cruise? Did the pedal constantly "hunt" for the right pressure? Mine has done it from day one. The dealership said their usual - "condition normal" or "cannot duplicate customer complaint."

Well, no matter what, it sure makes everyone feel better when they know they are not alone.

Besides, the F-150 is still the best built, best selling and best looking truck on the road today (IMHO.)

KKirt1,

While reading the shop manuals I noticed that the first thing advised on each and every diagnostic proceedure was "verify customer complaint". It's like they are supposed to be distru****l first. So its not their fault you see, its in the book! LOL.

Now I'm going to have to set up a test on mine to see if I have this also. I will let you know however, I might just stop reading this board and go back to my peacefull ignorance. So if you don't ever see me post again you will know.

Cool

The condition you describe is normal.
The gas pedal moves all by itself when cruise control is engaged. It does it on my F-250, my classic Chrylser Imperial and my Mercury Grand Marquis.
I agree, it was quite disconcerting the first time the pedal "dropped away" from my foot when I encountered a slight grade.
I got used to just setting my foot on the floor

Yea, I know about the pedal movement but what I am feeling is a constant in and out movement. You know, give it gas, let off, give it gas let off etc. etc. It sure isn't the way I would drive it but who knows, maybe the cruise control is smarter than I am! he!he!he!

In the old days, that would cause gas mileage to suffer. That was when engines had carburetors and accelarator pumps. May not be an issue with a fuel injected engine.

Can you actually feel the truck surging? If not, theres probably no problem. BTW, even tho there isn't a carb, the principles are the same.

Question

kkirt1 -
Is it surging on relatively level roads? If so, take it to the dealer and complain because there's something wrong.
Good luck.

I believe what you describe is normal. The pedal will move as the cruise changes rpm's/speed.

Set your cruise as you approach the bottom of a hill and then reach over and punch off the overdrive. The pedal will go almost to the floor for the right hill.

kkirt1 - Telenberger is correct - this is NORMAL.
The cruise works like your foot on the throttle - when you go dwnhill it backs off to maintain your set speed - likewise on uphills - it must increase to allow you to maintain that change.
It is a device operated off the driveshaft, electronicly, or vacuum controled & connected to the throttle.
If it continues - on a flat straight road, there is something wrong.
BTW - Ford cruise is acknowledged as "the best on the market"
Hope this helps.

You know, I don't feel the truck surging while in cruise control. I would also tend to agree with the consensus that Ford's cruise control is a leader in the market. I never have had a problem with it except this little annoyance.

It does get in and out of the pedal, what I think is too much, on flat roads. I have just learned to keep my foot from touching the gas while it is on cruise. I never notice it unless I "feel" the gas pedal.

And like I said, while it was under warranty I took it in to have it looked at and sure enough the dealer said "oh, that's normal." At the time I had bigger fish to fry with the piston slap issue and just let the cruise problem slip by.

kkirt1,

Does the set speed varry? If it does then you have a problem, if not it is OK for now. I would check actuator cable for binding. If the cable encounters resistance the speed will not increase causing the system to demande more throttle and when it over comes the binding it has too much throttle and releases.
