Hey guys,
I need some help here. I have code 19 which means 'open' 3.55. What is the advantage of moving to 3.73 or 4.10 gears? Should I consider Limited Slip? I plan on using my truck to tow (truck pulls mostly) etc, but M-F i do a lot of highway driving.
How expensive is a gear change and is it worth it?
Any information is helpful because I don't know squat about this stuff.
Thanks,
Wingnut

I've decided (or the wife has) to keep my
p/u F150... which means some long discussed
'concepts' will become reality. I have
an open axle (non LS) and wonder IF there is
a way to 'change' my current setup to 'just'
include LS?
Don't want a higher gear (3.55)... are there
lockers or some other partial alterations
that would work? Thanks.

Doc- To get the LS you must change your differential; you can use any gears you like including those 3.55s. To do this requires the rear-end to be torn down. There are several types for the 8.8"; OEM or Auburn for the 9.75". When wanting the same gears, there is also a system that requires minimal tear down (this is not a entire differential). www.powertrax.com

Yeah, hey went over there and looked around.
Sounds like an easy swap out and in? But
I am not sure that "I'd" try it myself...
Anyone using the 'non-locker' limited
slip? Appears to be the way to go for
better traction and I live on an amazing
hill, could use it.
Thanks very much for the info.

All right everyone, I need some advice in a hurry. My rear differential blew a seal about 3000 miles ago, and as you can imagine the gears have literally torn themselves to shreds. When I took out the oil cap to the differential, metal shavings were just all over the place. I am assuming that the entire rear is shot, including the spider gears, so I will need a whole new rear end. I have a 4.6 4x4 with limited slip. My tires are 285/75/16, and I would like to pep up the truck. Please advise on best combo that I could have Ford put in for me.

I'm still just a little confused (c'mon, be gentle, I used to live close to Texas). Where exactly am I finding this "code" for the rear end (LS v. Open).
On my drivers side door, the tag give useful information (wgt, tp, vin, etc...) and the only reference was "axle" and a alphanumeric code under it (B6).
I cannot find any reference to this in any post, site, ect...
Is there somewhere I should look on the axle itself? What I am looking for is the ratio and whether it is open or LS.
Thx...
...oh, and for you millions of Texans, I am so kidding here.
