Cool

To install your own gears you need several specialized tools and general experience setting up gears. There's many websites you can search that show installations on mainly Mustang 8.8" rears. They show the pinion bearing removal and install, shimming, and gear patterns. This is not a good job for a beginner. You will have to post your year and engine to get advice on the speedo and your gear size as well (the 5.4L models use a 9.75" rear). Several companies make gears in this same price range; yes, the Ford Performance Products gears are nice and fairly priced. Since this is a 4X4, I take it you mean $300, or so, labor PER AXLE ??

Like Max said- it's really not a DIY job unless you have some experience.

If you can get someone competent to install the gears for $300, then I recommend paying the money. The shops that quoted me a price said 8 hrs to do the front gears and 4 to do the rear. Don't forget that you'll need two install kits, fluid, friction modifier if you have LS, and, depending on the wear, new bearings.

Gears can probably be purchased for less than $180. Front ring & pinion are "reverse cut" and may cost slightly more than the rear. If you don't have limited-slip, now is the time to add it.

When I had 4.10s installed in the Expedition last year, the entire cost (including Auburn LS) was around $1500. If you already have LS, then knock off about $350. Gears are a great mod, but they aren't cheap.

Post Moving up to 4.10 gears

Has anybody ever installed their own gears and if so was it a hard job. I have a 4x4 with the stock 17" wheels and tires. What gear will I have to get to correct the speedo? It looks like it will save me about $300 if I can do this myself. Also, I will need to get the 8.8 4.10's correct? Ford motorsport has the gears at $180.00 per set. Is that reasonable or can I find them cheaper? Let me know if anyone has any advice.
