Post Spillage seal

A couple of weeks ago I had the slip yoke replaced on my truck. On the reciept it said that they removed the spillage seal. I know it is on the transfer case but what was its purpose and why did they remove it?

ford-tough1,

Is there a part number for this seal? My manual (Helm BTW) shows no "Spillage" Seal in the diagram. Is there possibly another name for it?

Regards

No part #. The reciept only says: "Replaced slip yoke and removed spillage seal from transfer case". Thanks for your help.

Do you have a slip yoke on the front of your rear driveshaft going to the transfercase?

ford tough 1, When you have a male slip spline coming from the rear of the trans-case and then have a female slip yoke on the driveshaft there is a small seal or plug in the center & back of the slip yoke. Its hidden by the u-joint, it keeps the trans-case oil from seaping out through the center of the slip yoke. I'm not real familiar with the new Fords, but GM used to use this set-up with the same type of spline system mentioned above. You might be able to see if your truck has this by using a good flashlight and looking on the back of the slip yoke , it will be small 1/4" to 3/8" approx. Its not very big but plays an important role, it will give the appearance the rear seal on the transfercase is leaking but its actually coming from the rear of the slip yoke, behind the u-joint. This could be your spillage seal, Maybe? Good luck;0 .
