Limited Slip Differential Service at dealer

Hi,
I took my 2005 F150 to the local Ford Dealer for rear limited slip differential service/oil change. I was quoted 130 bucks plus cost of fluids. The bill had a charge for 110 dollars for ULTRA GUARD and 25 for silicon sealant. Seems like a ripoff to me, rear lube oil and some of the friction modifier should be that much. And, no gasket? RTV for a gasket down there doesn't seem right.

Any one have thoughts on this?

Thanks

Rich

Factory has been using RTV instead of a gasket for many years now.

You paid a typical dealer inflated price. Around here, you can get the whole job done with labor, fluid, modifier, and gasket for about 180 bucks at an independent shop.

You can do it yourself for about $50, 3 bottles of Valvoline Syn fluid, one bottle of FM, and I use a gasket available at any auto parts store instead of rtv for more reliable service. I didn't use FM in my last change because the valvoline already had it.

Thank you guys for the comments and advice. I called the Ford dealer yesterday and asked why I didn't see Friction modifier on the bill and they said the BG Ultra Guard "Had everything I needed in it" The charge was 100 dollars for the Ultra guard so it should include the FM stuff and then some for that price. Thanks again for the help!

They used to charge $18/bottle of Motorcraft synthetic lube. Now they are charging $110/3 = 36.66/per bottle of this magic stuff?!! Last time I changed mine, I bought Valvoline synthetic with the FM in it for about $9/bottle. $25 for a partial tube of rtv! $130 labor for a half hour job?! Stealership is the right name!

BG is good stuff, but it's high profit. Only place I see it online is almost 30 bucks a quart.

Ok, it's polyalphaolefin, what used to be called synthetic motor oil before everybody went to Group III dino oil and called it synthetic. I'm sure it's good stuff but I wouldn't buy it when the stuff I use is perfectly fine.
